Garden tips for people who hate gardening

Whitcombe Teak Garden Trestle Table and Bamboo Chairs

Hate gardening but would like a welcoming outdoor space? You’re not alone. Here’s the good news; with very little effort and even less gardening know-how you can have a beautiful garden perfect for relaxing on your outdoor table and chairs and partying all summer long (and beyond). Here’s how.

Ditch the grass

If there is one aspect of a garden that causes anxiety for the non-gardener, it is the vast expanse of lawn that requires regular mowing. Ditch it in favour of a practical patio or decking, making sure you get details such as lighting and varying floor levels for interest.

Make more of seating

Selborne Double Rattan Lounger Set

Regardless of how big or small your garden is – or whether you are a gardener or not – you will want to spend time relaxing, napping, reading and socialising in your garden. And that means outside furniture such as a small garden table and chairs. However, don’t just opt for one type of seating. Different seats offer different possibilities such as rattan garden loungers for a summer’s afternoon nap in the garden or a comfy bamboo garden bench for enjoying the sunset and a cocktail or two.

Hampstead Bamboo Outdoor Bench

One focus

Gardens can be a cacophony of colour or they can be of a minimal design, with minimal updating and care needed. If the latter does it for you, opting for a singular colour and plant is a perfect choice. In other words, once the hard landscaping is complete, you arrange your outdoor furniture around pockets of planting, maintain the same plant and colour throughout. It gives a fantastic designer appeal to your outdoor space and can be changed each year if you desire.

One raised bed

Raised beds are a gift. They offer a defined pocket of flower and plant growing space that is super easy to plant up and maintain. You don’t need a lot of gardening know-how when it comes to plant choice – your local plant nursery will help – but opting for ‘safe’ choices such as the ever fragrant and quintessentially English lavender is perfect for around seating areas and the al fresco dining area too.

Whitcombe Teak Garden Trestle Table

Or opt for shrubs

Evergreen shrubs are a delight. They thrive in almost any soil, only requiring a quick prune in spring to contain straggling growth. The rest of the time you have a garden bathed in green and perfect for relaxing and entertaining.

Paving & pots

If all else fails, a courtyard style garden with ‘patio and pots’ is not only hard to get wrong but perfect for everyone, gardener or not. Use pot plants full to the brim with colourful bedding plants (you renew these each year and takes no more than compost, plants and watering through the summer) to create areas for different garden activities. A garden dining set for dining works best by the house but the outdoor sofa works best in the sunniest spot of the garden. Make sure to add some outdoor storage to keep the cushions handy when guests come over.

Fake it

You’d be joining the hundreds of non-gardeners and gardeners alike in enjoying a carpet of lush green grass that requires no upkeep and no mowing because it is artificial grass. Perfect for adding pops of green to everything from the garden to the roof terrace, faking it is certainly an option…

How to style a reclaimed chest of drawers

Winchester Reclaimed Wood Chest of Drawers

Bedroom chest of drawers are an essential choice for the bedroom, offering plenty of drawer space for storage of everything from clothes to personal trinkets. Don’t just put it in the corner, however. Style your reclaimed chest of drawers following these ‘rules’.

Start with a mirror or a piece of artwork

‘Framing’ your reclaimed wood chest of drawers makes sure it looks part of the overall bedroom décor. This is certainly true for a larger, 8 drawer chest which can look too imposing. If you need a mirror, use a large one to offset the chunkier frame of the large chest of drawers. However, if you have a mirror in another location, a larger piece of artwork would bring a welcome change. Either mount it on the wall or sit it on the very back of the chest of drawers.

Winchester Rustic Wooden Large Chest of Drawers

A table lamp

Adding height starts to create dimension to the space and a table lamp is perfect for this. Again, depending on the space you have on top, you could opt to balance this with another tall object as we’ve done on the top of this large dark wood chest of drawers. On a smaller chest of drawers, one tall object works well, although it doesn’t have to be a lamp, a plant or something similar would work well.

Winchester Dark Wooden Large Chest of Drawers

Something living

In fact, staying with the theme of plants, there is something about adding something living to the top of your chest of drawers. Reclaimed wood furniture is in itself a very natural product and so adding something that complements this is a perfect choice. Opt for easy to care for plants such as the lithe leaves of an Aloe Vera plant. If you struggle for space, opt for a shorter plan in stature to create symmetry.

Vary the height

With the artwork or mirror in place on your reclaimed chest of drawers and a plant to balance the symmetry now comes the tricky step of adding yet another ‘layer of height’. Choose a pretty accessory that is not as tall as your lamp but is a fraction taller than the plant you have chosen to include. The secret to a balanced look atop a 6 drawer chest or a chest of drawers of any size is a layered look. From a pretty jewellery stand to an elegant ornament of some kind, adding layered height really makes a difference.

Dulwich Medium Reclaimed Wood Chest of Drawers

A tray

Scour charity shops and other second-hand stores for pretty trays meant for the top of dressing tables and chest of drawers. The tray will keep bottles and other bits and bobs in place, keeping everything tidy but also bringing depth the top of the reclaimed wood chest of drawers. Keep the metallic finish the same as the frame of your mirror or artwork, and any other accessories you add to the chest of drawers. Or opt for ceramics, as we’ve done with this reclaimed wood large chest of drawers to great effect.

How to choose the perfect side table

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Side Table in Living Room

Humble it may be, but uber-practical, the side table is an addition to the living room you will wonder how you did without it. Get it right, and it melts into the background, almost stepping forward when you need and then retreating when no longer required. But how do you choose a side table that is both practical and stylish?

Height

The first thing to think about is height, a factor that works closely with purpose which we’ll address next. Too low and it will look too stubby but too tall, and it can look out of place. You’ll need to decide where to put the side table so you have a better idea of the height you can accommodate. Would the light features of a tall side table be the order of the day?

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Tall Side Tables

TIP – don’t have a side table taller than the arm of your sofa. Choose one that is a little shorter so that is ‘supports’ the sofa in its space.

Purpose

How you intend to use the side table is an important consideration too, especially when it comes to size and height. If you are using, for example, a side table in the corner of the room for a table lamp, you may choose to opt for a taller side table. If you need one for tea and coffee cups, glasses and the like, you’ll need a broader table top that can accommodate such use.

Storage – yes or no?

Some people want a small side table that does nothing more than hold their current novel and coffee cup next to their reading chair. For others, the side table can act as a welcome addition in the living room in terms of storage too. Options include a side table with a shelf or a side table with storage that offers a combination of shelving and drawer space too.

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Side Table in Living Room

Drawer and shelving space doesn’t mean you have to opt for a larger table either. This smaller dark wood side table would be ideal for both living room and bedroom. If your room can accommodate a larger side table, this industrial side table with an additional shelf would be a good choice.

Mitcham Oak Industrial Side Table

Shape

There are various shaping options;

  • Round – round side tables are great for encouraging flow in a room and can feel less imposing in a smaller room.

  • Slimline – a narrow side table is also great for a smaller space too but can also be a stylish addition too.

  • Square – a square side table is great for zoning a space too and with a larger square side table, you bring in more storage options to the living room.

Style

And finally, opting for the style that fits neatly with the overall styling choice of your home allows for a cohesive and symmetrical look, adding certain aplomb to your living space.

As well as industrial furniture, there are side tables with a heavy rustic flavour as well as reclaimed wood side tables with a coastal feel to them too. The simplicity of a Scandinavian style side table is also beautiful, perfect for slipping into place in most styles.

Wycombe Oak Side Table and Blue Fabric Sofa

With a little thought, a side table can be the addition to the other reclaimed wood furniture you need it to be in your living room or any other room come to that!

How to organise a pool party on a budget

Men and Women Talking by a Pool

The sun will (hopefully) shine this summer, and when it does, entertaining friends and family in the garden is something many of us do. A pool party is perfect – your guests can keep cool and have fun at the same time. Pool parties are not just for kids, however. Adults love them too! Better still, you don’t need to spend, spend, spend to have a good time with a pool party.

Save money on digital invitations

With the pool party date set, you need to make sure your guests put it in their diary to join you. Ditch paper invites – good news for your budget and the environment – and text invites instead or send out an e-invite using email. If you are super tech-savvy, start a private group on one of the many social media platforms inviting guests to your pool party.

Get the outdoor garden bar stocked (and ask for contributions).

Perhaps the most singular expensive aspect of hosting any party, summer pool parties included, is a well-stocked outdoor garden bar. From wine and cocktails to non-alcoholic fruit punches your budget will really start to feel the squeeze.

Ask people for contributions – most guests will be happy to bring a bottle of two for the outdoor garden bar, as they will to bring dishes for the patio table.

St Mawes Bar Table with Drinks Cooler in Reclaimed Teak

HINT – short on glasses? No problem! Opt for recycled paper cups that can be tipped into your kerbside recycling container.

Outdoor seating-savvy

Pool parties are great fun, but an influx of guests bring some logistical headaches. One issue can be seating. Plastic chairs are all well and good but they aren’t always the most comfortable, and from an environmental point of view, they are not the best option either.

If you have a dining bench, then bring this out too, great for kids when they’ve finished in the pool and for storing stuff like towels and other bits and bobs.

As well as dining chairs with your outdoor dining table, there is a range of outdoor seating options such as the relaxing seat offered by sun loungers. Rattan is an eco-friendly and sustainable material that is easy on the budget too. A pair of rattan sun loungers with a matching low table is great for the garden, especially pool parties.

Selborne Double Rattan Lounger Set

An excellent investment when it comes to versatile outdoor seating is an outdoor sofa. There are all kinds of shapes and sizes, including an L-shaped outdoor sofa. With a pool party, wet seating can be problematic but not with the showerproof cushion covers of the garden sofa set or garden bench.

West Strand Grey Corner Sofa Set

Don’t forget to have plenty of patio chairs around the patio dining table too!

Zone your garden

Making your guests comfortable is the sign of a great host, and for a garden or pool party, the expectations are no different. Zone your garden so your guests can enjoy different spaces and interactions. From informal, lounging areas to eating areas with an outdoor table and chairs, create spaces that are inviting. You may want to consider dry and wet areas too!

With great company, food and drink to share, along with a great pool, your pool party this summer will go with a swing.

In the spotlight: new industrial dining tables

Amalfi U Bar Oak Dining Table

The industrial style is perfect in so many ways. With the small detailing lifting it from minimal to refined and uncluttered, it is no wonder that the industrial dining table, whether a 6 seater dining table or something smaller, is one of the most popular choices for both the kitchen/diner and the formal dining room.

It is because of this popularity for the style, a timeless fusion between reclaimed wood and metal, that we have chosen to add three more industrial dining tables to our range. And none will disappoint. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which one to opt for…

The Standford reclaimed wood dining set

As reclaimed wood dining tables go, the Standford must surely be top of the list.

And no wonder, the reclaimed wood table top is appealing to both the eye and touch, it’s metal frame simple yet a welcome additional detail to a streamlined dining table.

The Standford reclaimed wood dining table is also versatile as it comes as a dining set. An extendable top means it can easily accommodate an influx of guests and diners. Opt for a two or four-seater, or why not discover the delightful practicalities of a dining bench?

The Amalfi u-bar industrial dining table

Similar in many ways is the Amalfi industrial dining table but with the added detailing of the u-bar legs at either end of this two-metre table. There is a grandeur to this table that attracts us – so we know you’ll love it – because reclaimed wood furniture always brings something unique. And the Amalfi u-bar industrial dining table doesn’t disappoint.

Amalfi U Bar Industrial Oak Dining Table

There is a cool smoothness to this table that is attractive. The refined wood table top would suit the smoothness of brown leather dining chairs or even a bench. But what is clear about this industrial table is its versatility. With the u-bar legs, it can easily morph from a four to six-seater dining table with a chair for a guest at each of its short ends.

If you like cool and chic, the Amalfi u-bar industrial dining table should be on your list.

The Amalfi white spider leg oak industrial dining table

The industrial style brings together brooding steel with the comfort, warmth and familiarity of wood and in most cases in our range, the uniqueness of reclaimed wood.

Amalfi Oak Industrial Dining Table and Velvet Dining Chairs

Details are careful and considered, something that we liked about the Amalfi white spider leg industrial dining table. This oak dining table epitomises the industrial style with a hint of glamour.

Glamour doesn’t always have to scream at the top of its voice. It can shimmer and dazzle without imposing which is why the detailed wood top of this inspired dining table is the perfect match for the straight lines of the spider legs.

Painted white, they inject plenty of glamour, a hint of ‘something different’ for the dining room but also perfect for the kitchen/diner too. Make even more of it with velvet dining chairs, and you have the perfect basis for industrial glamour in your dining room.

Which of these would be your choice?

Planning the perfect Spring Bank Holiday garden party

4 Women Chatting in Garden

When May arrives, it ushers in warmer temperatures and is also the start of the bank holiday season. With two public holidays in May, it is the perfect time to plan a garden party. But how can you give yours a party vibe?

Get out the cushions

We’re seeing more choice when it comes to cushions suitable for the outside furniture. Bright and vibrant colours and patterns make for an instant party vibe, a visual welcome too for when your guests arrive at your garden party.

Marden Rattan Garden Corner Sofa Set

Add extra cushions to your outdoor sofa and garden benches too. Why not opt for large outdoor floor cushions too, great for kids to lounge on?

The small details have it

With one eye on environmental impact, you’ll want to add accessories that are bright and fun but don’t cost the earth. Manufacturers are creating amazing paper pom-poms, ideal for hanging from pergolas, or the outdoor garden bar and fencing to add detail to your garden. Check the packaging for instructions, but most paper accessories and trimmings can be recycled at the kerbside.

St Mawes Bar Table with Drinks Cooler in Reclaimed Teak

Dress the table

Just like you make a super-stylish effort with your dining room table, do the same with your outdoor dining table.

A pretty table covering is a great base from which to build the rest of the table. Stick with the bright colours, opting for the on-trend flower patterns on table covers and napkins that designers are using this summer.

Food on Outdoor Dining Table

Add pots of flowers to your table too, along with candles arranged in an informal pattern across the centre of the outdoor dining table. You could also add small pot plants too, perfect for making the most of nature.

Invest in outdoor seating

If you enjoy hosting spring bank holiday garden parties, you’ll need to consider investing in outdoor seating that performs time and time again. As well as an outdoor dining bench, consider opting for an extendable outdoor dining table with plenty of dining chairs to accommodate your guests.

Hampstead Bamboo Garden Chairs and Teak Table

Patio chairs work well too, especially to create for informal seating areas. A rattan sofa is also an ideal purchase – great for dressing up with colourful throws and cushions – as well as a garden sofa set, complete with low-level coffee table for cocktails and coffee! Don’t forget to add shade to some seating areas too for those guests needing a break from the sun.

Games and socialising

The best parties are those that seem to flow effortlessly, but as any great party host will tell you, it takes a lot of background work to make it happen. 3 Women Talking in Garden

And that means having plenty of things for your guests to do – lawn party games from giant ‘Jenga’ to the more raucous ‘Twister’ game – to spaces that are for socialising. Food is always the big draw at any party, as too are the drinks. Serve cocktails and fruit punches from your outdoor garden bar.

A big welcome

And finally, as with any party, the summer garden party vibe is set from the moment your guests arrive, so make sure that the welcome is personal and warm.

How can I prepare my garden for summer?

Bosmah Garden Sofa Set with Armchair and Coffee Table

The days are longer and warmer which means one thing – spending as much time in the garden as you can? Creating an outdoor space that everyone can enjoy, and that has enough outdoor storage is not as hard as you think, especially with these great tips…

1 Spring clean

Just like indoors, when you feel the warmth of the late spring sun, get to work spring cleaning your garden. From emptying pots to getting rid of rubbish and clutter, to digging over borders, start your preparing your garden for summer by making sure it’s tidy.

Boasham Garden Sofa Set

If you have a garden sofa set, now is the time to whip off the cover and give it a brush or vacuum to get rid of any cobwebs and sheltering insects. Use warm water and a gentle detergent to give it a new lease of life and following the instructions on the covers, give them a gentle wash too.

2 Give each corner of your garden a job to do

For too long, we have seen the garden as only useful when it is a wide open space of lawn and flowers. But turning your garden into a living space with ‘rooms’ or zones will mean you get more use out of it.

For example, establish a dining zone for al fresco meals. As well as being close to the house of BBQ and pizza oven, you also need a firm base. Consider adding a patio, making sure you build one as big as you garden can accommodate so you can enjoy the patio table with plenty of room to spare.

Oldman Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Table and Bench

A ‘quiet’ zone is also great for kicking back and relaxing, and this is where rattan outdoor furniture really comes into its own. Able to withstand all kinds of weather, with sumptuous cushions, it’s perfect for sinking into to enjoy the sunset after a long day.

Walderton Rattan Garden Corner Sofa Set with Coffee Table

3 Small garden? Focus on HOW you’ll use it

If you’re not gifted with acres of garden space, you won’t want to stuff it full of furniture and pergolas simply because it will stop you truly enjoying the garden. If you have a smaller outdoor space, choose the outdoor furniture that serves your main priority for using your garden. For example, a simple garden bench is perfect if you enjoy lounging in the garden. If you want to eat outdoors, investing in a folding patio dining set is a perfect choice – simply fold it and store it when not in use. Hampstead Garden Bamboo Bench

4 Summer garden party ready

It doesn’t take much to give your garden a quick and easy overhaul ready for the summer garden party and BBQ season. Aside from fragrant blooms, you need to make sure you have garden furniture that is versatile, practical and stylish.

For informal get-togethers, an outdoor garden bar is surely the winning choice? With a pleasing style to it, it wouldn’t look out of place alongside an impressive rustic style 6-seater dining table. Get even more guests around the table with a dining bench, a brilliant addition to your home and garden.

Whitcombe Outdoor Dining Table

And finally, let the romantic in you come out with plenty of scented flowers and climbing plants for shades of the pergola and soft lighting that invites people to spend as much time as possible in the garden.

Bring the summer into your living room with green rugs

Louis de Poortere Cracks Dark Pine Green Rug

Green is a beautiful colour, ideal for lifting the interior of your home to carry you through summer well into winter. There are earthy, regal shades of green as well as lighter shades that bring a welcome breeze of change through your home. Just how can you use green rugs to their best effect?

Light green rugs

Lighter shades are perfect for any space but certainly for the smaller room or for when light is lacking. Make the most of light, natural and ambient, with light green rugs that introduce no more than the merest hint of colour.

Louis de Poortere Pear Green Rug

Top tip – don’t worry about matching colours exactly. Even if you do achieve this result, which is almost impossible, you’ll find it looks too contrived.

Switch it up with patterned green rugs

As a colour, green is great for complementing and contrasting other colours in your scheme. Green is considered an important colour in the ‘natural’ colour palette that appeals to the human eye. And that means it slots nicely into a colour scheme whether that is neutral creams, beige and grey or a room awash with stronger colours.

Louis de Poortere Vintage Patchwork Green Rug

If you love the soft, delicate pastel shading of the colour wheel, opting for patterned green rugs is one way forward. There are various options, as you would expect, including ‘strong’ patterns such as patchwork large living room rugs. For less pattern definition, opt for an abstract green rug, ideal for sitting alongside the grey leather sofa in the living room or the dining room.

Louis de Poortere Cracks Dark Pine Green Rug

Centre of attention

A rug is a floor covering that works well in most rooms and spaces. Adding texture and warmth underfoot, it can be a sublime, gentle addition or the centre of attention. As well as an impressive shade of green, choose a ‘pattern’ that is clearly meant to stand out. A non-distinct pattern without borders allows the room scheme to flow and yet a bold printed rug will act as the cornerstone of the whole room.

Louis de Poortere Atlantic Ocean Green Waves Rug

Take the tripartite approach

Successfully decorated and furnished rooms have a logic to them, something which comes, in part, to how the furniture is arranged. Giving thought to how a green rug will ‘sit’ in a room is important.

Thinking in terms of grouping in threes works. For example, in the living room, as well as your sofa and reclaimed wood coffee table, a green rug acting as a platform and the third member of the group gives the room a solid feel.

In a reading corner of the master bedroom, for example, a beautiful traditional patterned green rug along with a small armchair and side table paints an instant picture – in other words, it is clear what the space is being used for.

Louis de Poortere Avlu Green Rug

A note on size

No matter what colour rug you are opting for, it needs to be the right size. Before you buy your green rugs for your summer interior design scheme, measure the room, and what is the largest rug it can accommodate leaving a gap around.
