How To Style Your Rustic Wood Furniture With 2020 Colour Of The Year

Each year, Dulux brings us the colour of the year, a choice of colour and hue that will create a backdrop for our homes. This year’s choice is Tranquil Dawn, a beautifully soft, hazy shade of green that will be welcomed in homes across the country. When it comes to reclaimed wood furniture, the combination of this beautiful shade with the natural wood is perfection.

Why green?

Tranquil Dawn is a departure from last year’s Dulux Colour of the Year in that Living Coral was a bright, vibrant peachy shade. This year, there is a muted undertone to the choice, something that Dulux said was quite deliberate in their choice.

A big green leaf in a short glass vase

“Fuelled by a greater understanding of the impact social is making on the planet,” said Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux, “the panel identified the universal theme for 2020 as a desire to create more opportunities to experience a ‘human touch’ in our lives and homes”.

The colour also marks the start of a new decade, with Tranquil Dawn bringing calmness and comfort at a time when we need it most.

A restful colour found in nature

A colour abundant in nature, it’s no surprise that green, especially the shade chosen as the colour of the year, is known to bring calmness, comfort and a sense of peace and restfulness to a space.

A new colour of the year, however, doesn’t mean you have to hot foot it down to the local DIY store to buy a tin! You can introduce the tranquillity of green into your home in other ways.

Having said that, this shade of green will look perfect in any room, whether that is as a backdrop to your reclaimed wood dining table or across all the walls in your living room.

Welcome green shades into your home

Reclaimed wood furniture brings the same warmth and comfort as this colour of the year from Dulux. Introducing pockets of green is the ideal way of introducing calmness and tranquillity across your home. Here’s how to do it…

In the dining room…

Green linen tablecloths and runners are perfect for any reclaimed wood dining table. As well as avocado green table linen, for a lighter more subtle shade, opt for ocean green.

In the living room…

A green rug works perfectly across the home but would be ideal for pulling together the strands in the living room. A recycled glass lamp with green shade on a nest of tables or display unit in the lounge would be the perfect partner to the rug.

Dark green velvet shell chair with gold legs

Or, for more of a statement, opt for a green small armchair, ideal for a glamorous industrial style living room with natural undertones. On leather sofas or armchairs, why not add texture and colour with green cushions and throws?

In the bedroom…

Green rug with a wicker pouffe in front of a bed with green plant-printed bedding

Again, the large recycled glass table lamp with green shade would make a fantastic addition to the bedroom, perfect as a complement to rustic furniture in the bedroom, or any other style for that matter. A large green rug would also add the warmth underfoot that fits well with this style too.

Green is a beautiful colour to work with and no matter what shade you choose, it will look superb across your home.

Discover our sleeping tips for when the clocks change

Person reading book in bed

When the clocks fall back an hour at the end of October, it officially signals darker evenings. Whilst this can be a joy in many ways, it also presents some of us with a problem and that is, adapting our sleep pattern to fit with the change in time.

This isn’t an uncommon problem. Jet lag is similar. The body’s natural rhythm becomes disrupted by changes in time zones. It can take a period of adjustment to get back to our natural sleep pattern but there are things you can do to encourage your body to wind down at the end of the day and enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

1 Accept that your sleep may be disrupted for a few nights

Some people are sensitive to the change in the clocks and so when you know this will be the case, taking steps to be prepared can help.

Start by decluttering the bedroom, clearing the tops of your rustic furniture and making it a relaxing space helps get you in the mood to nod off. A change will have an impact on how you feel about the room. For example, fresh linen on your reclaimed wood bed is a sheer delight, as to is having a wafting gentle scent of a diffuser or scented candles. Lavender is a restful scent that can lull your whirring sense to a state of calm.

Standford reclaimed wood bed in bedroom

Clear the top of your small dressing table and wooden bedside table too so that there is no unnecessary clutter to detract from it being a restful space.

2 Have a bedtime routine and stick to it

A bedtime routine is just as important for adults as it is for children! A warm bath can help you to relax before bed, as too can set a time when you will have your bath and go to bed. The temptation is to leave it until we feel tired, but this can make us overtired and more fretful about not getting to sleep!

3 Digital, screen-free zone

With your reclaimed wood furniture decluttered and a few choice accessories around, you now need to set a rule and one that can and will revolutionise your life: the bedroom is a digital and screen-free zone. Ditch the mobile (leave that somewhere else) and if you read via an electronic reader, leave that for daytime reading opting for the printed word instead. Reading helps the mind to slow right down and when you feel the eyelids start to droop, put your book down, turn off the light and allow yourself to sink into sleep.

4 Don’t eat too late

Some people believe that the less your body has to do at night time, the more likely you are to fall to sleep. Eating before bed means the body is busy digesting food in the gut and for some people, that means being awake. Allow yourself two hours after dinner before bed and steer clear of spicy foods that could lead to indigestion.

5 Don’t worry about not sleeping!

It may take a few nights but eventually, your body will fall back into its natural rhythm. In the meantime, enjoy your bedroom and a good book!

Top tips for creating a warm and cosy home

Winchester Rustic Wooden Blanket box in room

Creating a peaceful, cosy haven in your home is about creating a space that appeals to all the senses. Inviting you in, there is nothing more pleasing than finishing the end of a busy day to find your house welcoming you home. Just how do you create such a space?

Scent

There is no denying the impact that scent has on welcoming us into a space. But during the winter, the scents that appeal to us vary from those of summer. That doesn’t mean that floral notes are not welcome anymore, but rather than a heady perfume, we welcome subtle notes.

Rathbornes Dublin Tea Rose Candle

As well as opting for the delicate florals of white candles, the deeper notes of musk can be just as enticing. But just as you vary the scent of the candles, vary their sizes too. Cluster large candles with smaller ones and enjoy the hypnotic, flickering flame in the evening and wake to the gentle scent of the best scented candles hanging in the air.

Texture

As well as scent appealing to the senses, plenty of different textures in the home also make it feel snug and cosy.

Plush fabrics are essential for the winter months. Sheepskin rugs, wool throws and blankets make a great addition and work well against a leather sofa, armchair and reclaimed wood furniture or even with a reclaimed wood coffee table, perfect for placing that hot cup of cocoa and favourite book.

Wool is enjoying a resurgence in recent years. Not only is it long lasting, wool is a natural insulator making it warm in winter and cool in summer. Invest in wool throws and blankets to keep your living room and bedroom the perfect temperature throughout the seasons. And why not add a wooden blanket box to keep them in too?

Winchester Rustic Wooden Blanket Chest

With so many patterns and colours, there is bound to be something to sit alongside your large fabric sofa or leather armchair!

Visual

There is a saying in cookery that we eat with our eyes first and when it comes to feeling warm and snug in our homes, there is a lot to be said about the visual appeal of the room.

As well as richer colours – who can resist a dark jewelled red or a rich, forest green for soft furnishings and rugs in the winter? – adding layers of light instantly add an attractive cosiness to a room.

Better still, layers of light work well in any room in the home, including the hallway and landing.

With lighting, it’s important to get the layers right. You’ll need practical lighting – the sharp, bright light for when you are working in the kitchen or cleaning the living room – and then you need ambient light, a gentle light that illuminates the room, plus in the background, a softer light that stops darks shadows and corners infringing on the room.

Bamboo Manta Triple Pendant Light

Pendant lights can offer all layers of light. Perfect for spotlighting the dining table, for example, a bamboo pendant light casts a pleasant shade. Clustered pendant lights or pendant lights fixed in a row make a great statement feature too. Choose natural materials, such as a jute pendant light, that will fit with any style from rustic to contemporary.

What other ideas do you have for creating a cosy, warm home?

Meet the comfiest (and stylish) sofa bed

Selma Sofa Bed in Living Room

All our new collections receive a warm welcome but we think the latest addition to our expanding range will prove to be one of our most popular products yet – say hello to the Selma fabric sofa bed.

Impromptu guests or Airbnb

Opening our homes and extending an invitation to family, friends and guests to stay is a wonderful luxury. However, with all the best intentions, this often results is the lack of extra beds. With every room full to bursting, just how do you fit in more space for people to sleep?

Foldaway beds and sofas haven’t always enjoyed a good press. Poor in style and even worse for comfort, foldaway beds don’t tick any happy boxes. The Selma fabric sofa bed will banish these preconceptions.

Contemporary style with a hint of the Scandinavian that fits right into the suave industrial style too…win!

Aside from being comfortable to sit and sleep on, we fell for the Selma fabric sofa bed because of its looks.

Selma Fabric Sofa Bed

There is more than a hint of stylish versatility to it that means it will fit into the contemporary style with its switched squares and play on lines and angles.

But, it also hugs closely to the Scandinavian style with its clean lines and minimalist appeal, as well as its grey and cream colour options, that will sit beautifully well in the Scandi style too.

It also dovetails with the industrial style. Again, it’s the clean lines, the neutral tones and the angles make it ideal for the industrial styled home or Airbnb rental property.

How to style it

Opening up into a small double bed, this sofa bed is ideal for the unexpected guest or as an optional extra in an Airbnb property.

By day, it acts as a comfortable and spacious fabric sofa – we would say a generously sized 2 seater sofa bed – and by night, it offers a comfy space for guests to lay their heads.

Selma Sofa Bed with Mitcham Oak Coffee Table

In terms of the industrial style, it’s a great foil for items from the Mitcham Collection. Against the Mitcham sideboard and the matching industrial oak coffee table, the modern sofa bed looks right at home.

In a room where space is at a premium, you could also opt for a side table with storage, ideal for guests to temporarily safely store their belongings. Add understated texture with layers of throws and complementing cushions, as well as a rug or two. In a small room, large living room rugs make great options for adding both warmth visually and underfoot too.

And don’t forget the accessories. As well as dressing the space with a lush green plant, we also opted for Rock pendant lights and stylish artwork.

Resplendent in its position…

… and in the versatility that it offers you for entertaining guests. Great at home, it makes for a great addition to your Airbnb rental or rooms too.

Restore harmony in the bedroom with a round mirror

Wycombe Oak Round Dressing Table Mirror

A mirror in the bedroom is considered a necessity. As well as checking your appearance, a bedroom mirror also helps to reflect light around the room and create an illusion of space. But where should you place the mirror? And what style works best?

Opting for a round bedroom mirror

The round wall mirror adds interest to a room with interior designers telling us that when you are opting for just the one mirror, opting for a round one is a great choice. And when it comes to size, choosing one that fits with the proportions of the room helps to accent its appeal.

When it comes to positioning the mirror, consulting with the ancient traditions of Feng Shui can help. As well as making sure that mirrors don’t face each other, you will also need to avoid a mirror above your bed and, if possible, facing your bed too. Also, try not to position it facing the door and don’t hang it on a south-facing wall. This might limit your options, you may think, but get the round wall mirror in the right place and it can make a real difference to the light in the room.

Which mirror suits your bedroom style?

Reclaimed wood furniture is the kingpin of many styles from rustic to contemporary and Scandinavian – and there is a delightful round mirror to match!

The Scandinavian furniture style is popular, especially for the bedroom. With its warm and familiar features, it makes for a calm, restful space.

There is no reason why you can’t have two mirrors in the bedroom (just make sure they’re not facing each other!) with this dressing table mirror perfect with oak bedroom furniture. The handy cutaway in its base is perfect for storing small items such as earrings and rings.

Wall mirrors are ideal, especially when fixed at a point that means you can check no hair is out of place as you leave you boudoir to face another busy day or enjoy a fun night out. And sometimes, simplicity is best, like this narrow framed large round mirror, perfect for sitting alongside the oak dressing table mirror.

If you would like a little more decoration and detail but don’t want to stray too far from the Scandinavian style, the vibe from this retro round wall mirror could be just what you are looking for. It has detail without clutter, perfect for the Scandi style.

But there’s no reason why you can’t have a hint of luxury and glamour in the Scandi inspired bedroom. Just be subtle with a hint of detail that attracts attention but doesn’t bowl the room over. This Industrial Window Mirror placed in an area where the light catches the metallic of the finish will do the trick.

Give your bedroom a sleep make-over (sleepover!)

Beam Marlow Reclaimed Wood Bed

Figures estimate that around a third of us will struggle with getting to and staying asleep. Occasional sleep troubles usually pass, but when sleep problems persist, it’s time to take a look at your bedtime routine as well as the bedroom environment itself.

Update your bedroom

The sleep environment is important. It needs to be calm and quiet and not just physically either, but in its décor too. And sometimes, making a complete change to the bedroom environment can be one way of improving the quality of your sleep.

  • Choose a style that you find calming, comfortable and warm

Our personal choices vary and so what one person finds calming, another may find stark. The rustic style is a fantastic choice for the bedroom. Reclaimed wood furniture oozes mystic, especially as it mingles with carefully chosen accessories.

  • Keep storage at the forefront of your mind

A common issue that people find clouds the bedroom space is clutter. It may be hidden but those piles of boxes under the bed or items stored on top of the wardrobe all contribute to a less than perfect bedroom. Consider a rustic large chest of drawers with a complementing wooden bedside table to keep your bedroom essentials close at hand, but out of sight.

Standford Reclaimed Wood Large Chest of Drawers

  • Pay close attention to the bed

A soft yet supportive mattress is key to waking refreshed and ready for the day ahead, but the bed frame also plays an important part. A reclaimed wood bed fits right into the rustic bedroom style, creating a warm and inviting space. You’ll find all the stylish piece you need in our ever-popular Beam Rustic Furniture Collection.

Beam Marlow Reclaimed Wood Bed

  • Paint the walls

Against a neutral backdrop, the pieces of from the Beam Collection will stand out beautifully. Neutral tones will also be the perfect choice for creating a warm and relaxing bedroom too. Opt for warm creams or even a pale pink or very light yellow for the rustic bedroom, staying away from colours that have cool undertones such as blue.

  • Keep textures calm too

We often assume that plenty of fluffy textures is the way forward to creating a cosy rustic bedroom, but you might find that ‘busy’ textures aren’t quite what you need. Smoother textures are ideal against reclaimed wood furniture in the bedroom, as too as ‘quieter’ patterns.

Settling the mind before sleep

With the bedroom updated to bring a calmness and serenity to it, you now need to add the touches that help to settle a racing mind at the end of the day. There are a few ways of doing this;

Rathbornes Cassis Leaves and Jasmine Diffuser

Calm the senses – SMELL – a pleasant, calming aroma in the bedroom can help to settle the mind before sleep. Gentle scent is top of the list and so look for diffusers that release their scent gently. The same is true of scented large candles too.

Calm the senses – VISION – ditch the electronics as the blue light stimulates the retina and that means the brain is reawakened at a time when you need it to calm.

Calm the senses – TOUCH – warmth is important but you don’t want to be too hot or cold in your bedroom. As well as setting the temperature in the room, opt for layers of throws on the bed which can you removed when needed

Make your Airbnb bedroom a 5* rustic hit

Standford Reclaimed Wood Chest of Drawers

Airbnb it has transformed the way we travel. With more people opening their homes to fellow travellers, we’ve written an extensive guide on how to make your home Airbnb ready with rustic furniture, including getting your guest bedroom Airbnb ready.

Bedroom storage is a definite must-have in a guest room and so with this in mind, we take a look at some of the best bedroom storage options.

How to store clothes in a limited space?

Guests will expect the bedroom to have somewhere to unpack their clothes and belongings, but that doesn’t mean you have to have masses of storage space. As well as a wardrobe and chest of drawers, think outside the box, literally, with a stylish and versatile blanket box.

As the name suggests, these large trunks were once used to store spare towels, bed linen and throws, something they can still be used for today. But for your guests, a blanket offers a great alternative to store clothes and belongings whilst bringing certain rustic charm to the room.

Worcester Reclaimed Wood Blanket Box

There is a design of box to suit every style, be it a rustic blanket box with a smooth domed lid or a colonial style rattan blanket box with a padded top, which can also double up as a practical bedroom seat.

How do you maximise space in a small bedroom?

In a small bedroom, where floor space is at a premium, you don’t want to overload the room with furniture, but at the same time, you want your guests to have the luxury of ample storage space.

Standford Reclaimed Wood Century Chest of Drawers

The Standford chest of drawers and cupboard is a versatile piece of reclaimed wood furniture that offers drawer space and cupboard space in one. In a smaller bedroom, it can also easily function as a rustic bedside table next to a reclaimed wood bed, as can this medium chest of drawers. This time in a dark shade, it makes a very pretty bedside table. Opt for a matching pair and position either side of the bed; when space is at a premium, smaller items of furniture instead of one large chest of drawers can be the better option.

Winchester Reclaimed Wood Tall Chest of Drawers

Another solution is to opt for the tall chest of drawers. Tall and narrow, they take up less floor space, ideal if you have higher ceilings in your guest room. These chest of drawers are also perfect for a corner or to fill a gap next to the wardrobe.

How can I make a small bedroom look bigger?

The knack of making a room feel bigger is to maximise the amount of floor on display and that means choosing furniture that has a gap between its underside and the floor. Choosing key pieces that your guests will love is also key.

Dorset Reclaimed Wood Dressing Table with Drawers

For example, a white dressing table with drawersgives not only drawer space but tabletop space too. Similar in design, the extra storage options and details of this rustic dressing table will also complement a smaller bedroom.

Bedside tables that are not imposing in their dimensions also help to make more of the bedroom space but offer enough storage for guests staying in the short term. Useful features such as the pull out extra table on this chest of drawersis perfect for a morning cup of tea!

Dulwich Reclaimed Wood Bedside Table

With so many options, you’re sure to find the right furniture that will guarantee guests return time and time again!

Rustic styling tips for small bedrooms

Worcester Reclaimed Wood Bed and Blanket Box in Room

Styling a small bedroom means solving many problems but it is possible to create a relaxing space. The rustic style lends itself perfectly – streamlined, yet warm and comfortable, it brings many options to the smaller bedroom.

Limit the colour palette

Reducing the number of colours you use on walls and soft furnishings will bring a sense of symmetry and cohesion. The rustic interior design style effectively uses a neutral but warm colour palette which means that cool light blue walls or warm pastel yellow will work perfectly with reclaimed wood furniture.

Maximise floor space

A clever trick and one that you can use in any small space is to maximise the amount of floor on show. The more floor you can see, the bigger the small bedroom will feel.

And that means choosing a reclaimed wood bed that not only fit with the rustic style but is also non-bulky and overly oppressive.

With space between the underside of the bed and the floor, the headboard and footboard of the Standford reclaimed wood bed won’t look or feel too much in the smaller bedroom.

Worcester Reclaimed Wood Bed and Blanket Box in Rustic Bedroom

Consider painted bedroom furniture too, such as in the Worcester Collection, a range recently added to the Modish stable of beautiful rustic reclaimed wood furniture.

Maximise light

Light is important in any space but in a smaller bedroom, if it is at a premium, you need to take steps to make more of every inch of daylight and ambient light too. Mirrors and shiny surfaces clearly make a marked difference in a small space. A floor mirror will work wonders, especially in a shaded corner.

Floor Mirror in Bedroom with Bed and Open Wardrobe

Consider storage options carefully

Storage options in the smaller bedroom need to be carefully thought through. Not having enough makes it a less-than-practical space but you don’t want to crowd the room either. Consider which bedroom storage options will offer the best solutions. For example, a tall chest of drawers in a small room that has high ceilings won’t look out of place – the Winchester tall chest of drawers is a stunning example as are the tall drawers from the white painted version from the Dorset Collection.

Thornton Reclaimed Wood Large Chest of Drawers in Bedroom

Other chests of drawer options include the ample storage offered by a 6-drawer chest. With less height but broader width, the six-drawer option would be ideal along one wall. Accessorise with a pretty lamp and key pieces to add harmony and symmetry to the bedroom.

Frame the room

Like all rooms, a small bedroom needs points of reference that make sense to the eye. And that means getting to grips with framing the space. The easiest means of achieving this is with bedroom rugs. As well as adding colour, they bring texture too but choose size wisely – always leave a gap around the edge of the rug and the wall – and consider how much colour you want or need the rug to add. The rustic bedroom style relies heavily on neutral and light shades of colour but a darker shade of a highlight colour wouldn’t go amiss. A green abstract pattern rug wouldn’t look out of place.

Louis de Poortere Mad Men Central Park Green Rug

Don’t squeeze everything in!

Choose pieces carefully starting with the bedframe, followed by storage options but think outside the norm too – there is nothing to say that a blanket box won’t work in a small bedroom as storage.
