Old meets new in Finland: hotel interior design ideas

Lobby area of Runo Hotel

While many of us want to bring a touch of chic hotel design to the interior decoration of our homes, most hotels strive to create a luxury home-from-home look to their interiors. One such hotel that has achieved this beautifully, is RUNO Hotel in the historic coastal town of Porvoo, Finland. In our regular series of interior design ideas from hotels around the world, we explore the stylish interior of this rustic-meets-modern masterpiece.

With its soft neutral palette, understated style and proclivity for salvaged materials that stand the test of time, the RUNO Hotel is a wonderful example of how to transform a historic building into a laid-back modern space without losing its heartbeat. Many of the original features of the building, such as the majestic staircases, fireplaces and external reliefs, have been retained and lovingly restored using a blend of contemporary Nordic design and classic Scandinavian furniture.

Celebrating reclaimed furniture

Much like the reclaimed wood furniture we love, the theme of reborn is seen in every detail of the hotel. From the repurposed traditional textiles and locally handcrafted pieces of rustic furniture, some of which were crafted from centuries-old reclaimed floorboards or salvaged wooden hay sticks, the hotel respects the old while searching for the new.

The large open contemporary ground floor space that houses the lobby, lounge and restaurant combines a mix of Shaker-style furniture and modern classics including Hans J. Wegner’s iconic J16 rocking chairs and Space Copenhagen’s Spine lounge chairs with a harmonious colour palette to create a warmly inviting and homey atmosphere.

The neutral colour scheme is carried through in all of the 56 bedrooms, where an abundance of natural light gives the feature wooden furniture a natural warming glow.

Home decor ideas: Santa Monica Proper Hotel

Santa Monica Proper hotel bedroom

Our interior design ideas from around the world this month take us to the sun-drenched technicolour shores of Los Angeles to soak up the easy luxury coastal vibes of hotel Santa Monica Proper.

Occupying a 1920s building in the beachside neighborhood of Santa Monica, American interior designer, Kelly Wearstler, created a relaxed and eclectic aesthetic using a mix of contemporary furniture and rustic furniture with vintage influences. The public spaces and bedrooms are inspired by the local coastline and have been designed to help guests relax. Curved, organic and heavily textured materials and finishes blend with sandy palettes and natural elements, such as grasscloths, oversized plants and of course, palm trees.

Interior decoration: tactile wood

Wood and wood tones feature dominantly in the hotel. From the patterned hardwood oak floors and custom-made reception desk to the wood-effect wall cladding and warm brown patinas throughout, Wearstler worked with local artisans and artists to create a welcoming yet sophisticated atmosphere that embodies Santa Monica’s iconic beachside identity.

The organic tones and sandy hues continue into the suites and bedrooms. Curved fabric headboards and warm wooden furniture glow in the natural California light that spills into the space through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Our dose of home interior design inspiration from around the world this month takes us to the South Tyrol region of Italy to discover a unique wellness hotel where nature, architecture and people work together communally to create an oasis for the senses in a contemporary yet ultra-relaxing space.

Apfelhotel Torgglerhof is nestled between the mountains, woods, apple orchards and meadows in the small town of Saltaus at the entrance to the Passeier Valley, Italy. This award-winning family-run hotel is an architectural gem that beautifully combines old and new with finely crafted details, natural materials and a well-thought-out design. Nature and the characteristics of the region play a key role within the interiors with wood cladding, milling and rustic natural fibres used throughout to complement the rural surroundings. The addition of dark metal details contrasts beautifully with the materials running like a thread through all the carefully designed bedrooms, whilst textured and patterned finishes to the rustic furniture radiate cosiness and freshness.

The new wellness centre is an award-winning masterpiece of design and architecture. Embedded in nature, the building is clad entirely in grass and has been carved into a natural green slope so that it blends seamlessly into the landscape, so much so that it is hardly visible. Inside muted hues, stone, wood and wooden furniture, along with plenty of natural light ensure a pure and relaxing experience.

Guests are encouraged to eat outside ‘farm-style’, but the light and airy dining room exudes a contemporary rustic charm that is design-conscious yet inviting. The wooden dining tables featuring black-painted spider-legs have a matt finish to blend with the modern grey stone floors, whilst the curved spindle back wooden dining chairs in black and black wishbone chairs bring a cool Nordic feel. Natural rattan hanging pendant lights and plants soften the scheme.

House tour: A rustic beach cottage in Cornwall

Sarah Jane of Just a Little Build at Leat House in Cornwall

Leat House cottage in Cornwall

This slice of Cornish history embodies the very essence of coastal living, with original flagstone floors and thick local slate walls, the light and airy interior creates a cottage that’s picture-perfect from inside out.

Step inside

Set on a cobbled lane down to the sea in the tiny hamlet of Port Gaverne on Cornwall’s North Coast, Leat House is a wonderful 200-year-old coastal cottage and handiwork of the talented dynamo, Sarah-Jane, creator of Just a Little Build and Instagram account @justalittlebuild. With stunning uninterrupted views of the beach, sea and sheltered rugged cliffs, Sarah-Jane has turned this four-bedroom, two living room, dining room and two bathroom holiday cottage into a wonderfully welcoming space that feels fresh and modern whilst retaining the cottage’s original charm. Rustic furniture complement the painted panelled walls, original flagstone floors and neutral-toned interiors to create a space where visitors can surrender to the call of the sea and let the salty relaxed vibe get under their skin.

Living Areas

Brimming with Cornish character, Leat House has two living spaces both of which strike the perfect balance between bright coastal style and a sense of cosiness. A stylish neutral palette runs through both rooms on the walls and windows with subtle accents of pattern, texture and colour bringing warmth to the spaces. The thick original flagstone floor in the more casual of the two rooms is softened by a natural jute rug and a squid ink blue velvet sofa, whilst in the more formal reception room, Sarah-Jane opted for a light carpeted floor and muted rug. A mixture of blue velvet and light tan leather sofas allows for the delightful large bay window with views of the bay to take centre stage in this room, whilst rustic furniture such as a rustic coffee table adds natural texture.

Dining room and kitchen

Sarah-Jane continues the neutral tones with soft blue and grey accents in the kitchen and dining areas. The beautiful rustic dining table and grey painted wooden dining chairs with spindle back sit comfortably on the flagstone floor, whilst a blue wooden dresser with metal detailing gives a classic country cottage mood, not to mention handy storage. In the kitchen, the neutral colour scheme extends to the painted cupboards, we love the Aga and the small painted breakfast table with rustic stools and built-in seating in the bay window – the ideal sunny spot for a morning coffee whilst looking out to the sea. Blue furnishings and plants bring added colour and a contemporary feel to the room.

Bedrooms

The relaxed coastal vibe and muted colour scheme continue upstairs in the four bedrooms. Rustic influences include exposed wooden beams and painted wood panelling on accent walls throughout, together with furniture, such as a wooden bench at the end of the king-size bed in the master bedroom (perfect for perching to admire the magnificent views of the crashing Atlantic waves from the window), a rustic chest of drawers and painted wooden chest of drawers. All bedrooms are good sized doubles, with two benefiting from zip and link beds, making them ideal for family sharing rooms.
