Why we love the Dulux Colour of the Year – Bright Skies™

Why we love Dulux Colour of the Year Bright Skies

Dulux has just announced their top pick colour for 2022 – Bright Skies™ and we think it’s the perfect hue to pair with our rustic furniture.

The household paint company consulted with a team of international designers who looked at how interior trends have changed over the last 18 months and discovered that the desire to be more in touch with nature and the great outdoors is ever growing. Green has been an on-trend colour for some time and used in 1000’s of homes up and down the country, but now it is time for a switch to an uplifting summer sky blue. This pale blue is perfect for a rustic farmhouse kitchen and easy to mix with other natural “outdoor” colours.

We thought we would consider how this beautiful blue hue would work with some of our reclaimed wood furniture and also our newly launched mango wood furniture collections.

The Standford Industrial Reclaimed Wood collection

This is a collection of industrial furniture which we think would look fabulous with a soothing sky blue. We see this colour in an open plan kitchen/diner with large patio doors overlooking the garden. The pale sky blue colour would allow the reclaimed wood and metal industrial frame to really stand out, but it will also help to bring the outside in. Bring in accent colours via chairs, for example, in a rich, luxurious blue or industrial dark grey. For stylish storage, the industrial coffee table is a must-have – on this you can arrange some blue decorative pieces to continue the theme.

The Chelwood Reclaimed Wood collection

This classic collection is created from gorgeous pale reclaimed wood. If you want a light and airy look in your room the combination of the Chelwood collection and Bright Skies™ would be the perfect combination. Blue brings calmness and serenity to mind meaning your space would be one to relax in making it ideal for a soothing living room.

The rustic coffee table from the collection positioned next to a tan leather sofa or a leather Oswald 2 Seater Sofa will stand out beautifully against a lovely and calming pale sky blue.

The Canford Sustainable Mango Wood collection

The Canford mango wood furniture collection is new to our shop, we think it is absolutely gorgeous when paired with pale blue, sitting in complete harmony with a natural blue sky. Blue is a colour that is perfect for a soothing bedroom, dining room or living room and being pale, it allows the striking patterning of the Canford rustic furniture collection to really pop.

Houseplants are great in the bedroom and again this pale blue will provide you with a serene and restful backdrop. Coordinate your bedding by opting for a slightly bolder blue, bring in warm luxurious scatter cushions, bed throws and floor rugs to bring in warmth and comfort.

Top tips to style 5 rustic sideboards 5 ways

five wooden sideboards for top tips to style 5 rustic sideboards 5 ways

A solid wood sideboard works well in so many rooms – in the dining room, in a spacious hallway, in the kitchen, and of course in the living room. While they provide plenty of hidden storage on the outside what can you do with the top of them to turn them into an eye-catching focal point in your room? Here we show you how to style your wooden sideboard with five hot interior themes.

1. Boho vibes

The Serenity Reclaimed Wood Sideboard is a feature piece all on its own. The reclaimed solid wood from which it has been crafted is arranged into a striking pattern which is inset with detail. Give this sideboard a Boho look by adding natural elements like bamboo, dried grasses and terracotta to mimic the free-spirited and carefree nature of boho style. Coordinate this in your room with with layers of pattern, texture and warm colours, a perfect style match for natural rustic furniture.

2. Nordic Noir

The Nordic look is a popular as ever giving your room a cool and airy Scandi vibe. The Chelwood Nordic reclaimed wood sideboard has been styled with darker elements that contrast with the pale wood while still maintaining a cosy kind of minimalism. Here the solid wood has been paired with dark metal, as well as a houseplant in a smoked glass feature vase. The Nordic style embraces natural light and minimalist clean lined modern furniture.

3. Loft Living

Even if you don’t live in a loft you can still embrace the industrial look. Here we are looking at how to dress an industrial sideboard. The industrial interior style showcases utilitarian materials such as wood, metal, brick and cement. The Standford Medium Industrial Wooden Sideboard is crafted from hand-sawn reclaimed wood and nixon black distressed steel legs. A rustic sideboard with slick metal detailing that will bring in an instant NYC loft look.

4. Distant shores

You can give a dark wood rustic sideboard an oriental overhaul to create a zen-like relaxing space influenced by the tropical shores of the Far East. We feel this look is perfect on the Knightsbridge sideboard. Strand a large leafy pot plant on the floor next to it and on the surface add grey pots and decorative accessories and a couple more small lush and leafy house plants to give a contemporary feel.

5. Coastal chic

This works perfectly with a white painted sideboard, such as our Dorset Reclaimed Wood Large Sideboard, to bring in a relaxed easy- going vibe, coastal chic incorporates natural elements in a faded, washed-out finish. Its netural colour scheme is peppered with hints of green, grey and blue reminiscent of the sea. For this look you want white stone pots, mimicking pebbles or shells, grey wood, reminiscent of drift wood and “sailing” ropes.

Loft living: how to get industrial style in 2021

Girl sat on brown leather sofa facing a large warehouse window with exposed brick wall

It was in the late 60’s / early 70’s that the trendy loft conversions really started to take off in NYC ….and to this day they continue to gain in popularity. This is now spilling over into UK suburbia. Here we have a look at some inspirations and ways to bring the industrial look to your home.

Industrial loft style living room with large grey metal staircase and industrial coffee table

The features we associate with the industrial loft are bare brick walls, metal, neutral coloured walls, even bare plaster and concrete floors. You can interpret this look by having a grey tiled floor or using reclaimed wood floorboards and painting walls grey or off white. This all sounds a little harsh and cold but you can break it up by adding rugs, prints on the walls, houseplants, throws and cushions to soften the look. Mix different textures and materials together like leather, wood, metal etc. The loft look is supposed to be rustic, functional industrial furniture with simple sharp lines, and not too much fussines!

Industrial living room with exposed brick walls, warehouse windows and brown leather sofa

Loft spaces tend to be large open multi-use spaces – often incorporating a dining space, sitting area and even an office space. We love to see a brown leather sofa in a loft seating area – the brown leather will tie in warm reclaimed wood furniture on an industrial metal frame. The Oldman range is handmade, to bespoke sizes, right here in the UK – so you can furnish your open living space with an industrial reclaimed wood desk, shelving, coffee table and console table all from the same range in the sizes that suit your space. If you wanted an accent piece to slot in with the industrial theme then the Chestey 3 seater sofa in burnished orange velvet will definitely bring a pop of colour and luxury to your space.

Of course you don’t have to go the whole way with this industrial look, take a more subtle approach by introducing a few elements to your home. The Standford range includes the perfect industrial coffee table that you can build an industrial theme around – bring in an industrial sideboard from the range or the TV unit to introduce more elements. Again, the metal frames have the industrial element with the reclaimed wood adding warmth. In the dining room, you can add an industrial style pendant light over the dining table and opt for a dining bench instead of just chairs.

5 easy switches to get a modern farmhouse kitchen

Selection of wooden kitchen utensils including wooden board

Whitewashed wooden shutters with welcome hanging sign and kitchen wooden utensils

In our last blog we looked at how to set about achieving the very current modern farmhouse look – in this blog we follow this up and look at quick and easy changes you can make, concentrating on the kitchen. Of course, we can’t all go out and get a completely new kitchen so we are concentrating on 5 things you can do on a smaller scale to get a look that you can elaborate on over time.

Farmhouse furniture

A farmhouse table is a great switch to make – the kitchen is the heart of just about every home, so it is great to have a space to be able to sit down in – whether for a quick breakfast, a bite at lunch or a cup of coffee as you flick through recipes and ponder on what to rustle up for dinner. If you don’t have loads of space, a smaller round table will also work, set in a cosy corner. A wood table with wooden dining chairs will introduce warmth and a homely feeling to your dining space, it’s an investment that will reward you and your family for years to come.

Add a rustic dining bench

A rustic kitchen table with bench seating just screams farmhouse. Historically benches used to be the common form of seating with the chairs being reserved for the most important people around the table. Wooden benches still conjure up images of medieval feasts with people crowded around a table laden with food and ale! And now they are back and right on trend – a reclaimed wooden bench has one main benefit….you can squeeze more people around your table.

Reclaimed wooden cabinets

A beautiful and rustic touch to any kitchen – you can opt for an open shelving unit, a kitchen dresser with cupboards and a glass-doored display unit on top. If you like the feeling of space and to keep things out of view you can opt for a lower level kitchen sideboard. As long as it is crafted from full of character reclaimed wood, it will be a perfect fit for the modern farmhouse kitchen.

Natural elements

Stick to natural fabrics – add a faux fur throw on a wooden bench, a jute rug under your dining table and seating area, wicker baskets for additional storage, plain or printed hessian cushions. A mix of earthenware and terracotta pots are perfect and will slot right in, making perfect plant holders, fruit bowls and utensil holders.

Finishing touches

This is an area where you can really reinforce your personal style. You can opt for unusual pendant lighting, you can bring in a slightly industrial element here which incidentally looks wonderful with reclaimed wood furniture. Hang some pictures on the walls – you can go for photos of your family and friends or choose paintings of rural landscapes, wall decals are also popular right now – you can look online to find a quote that really suits you and your family to really bring in the personal element.

2024 Trending – Dining space style for the year ahead

Industrial oak dining table with six dark grey dining chairs and matching wooden sideboard

The dining space in our homes has most likely seen much more action throughout 2020 than it has in previous years! With all the family at home it has probably seen many more weekday family meals together, been a home office, a video call meeting room as well as a schoolroom, possibly even a quiet place to escape from the kids for a bit! So what are the trends for the dining space in 2024?

The dining room should reflect its many uses by becoming a more family-friendly and laid back space – more informal and less traditional. You can achieve a more relaxed, informal and spacious feel by opting for a round dining table and chairs instead of a rectangular wooden table.

Ensure the furniture and lighting in the room is multi-functional – plenty of light available if it is a study space that can be toned right down when a more intimate dinner party atmosphere is the order of the day – or should I say evening. When the time comes that we can open our homes to family and friends again you might find an extendable table is a very good move!

Improve the functionality of your dining space – with one room having so many varied uses, adequate storage space is essential to keep organised – wooden sideboards provide perfect storage for the dining space, ideal for storing serving dishes as well as school and office supplies all tucked neatly out of sight!

Bring natural elements into your dining space. House plants will continue to be a huge hit in 2021 – so try to incorporate them into your dining space. Natural and sustainable is of course even better so if you are thinking of replacing existing dining room furniture then a reclaimed wood dining table is the way to go. Industrial dining tables should also not be overlooked – industrial furniture will be as popular as ever.

Take your dining area into the garden – dining outside, has proven popular, with many of us transforming our gardens into ‘outdoor rooms’. This is likely to stay for the foreseeable future. Now is the time to make plans to create an outside dining area ready for spring and summer. You may be able to open up from your kitchen or dining room or create a separate area in your garden – you will want to consider how you will cook outside, source a nice outdoor rustic dining table and may want to include some form of patio heating as well.

2024 Trending – It’s not too late for Veganuary

Veganuary stared in 2014 when, after the festive excesses of December, a growing number of people chose to balance it out by opting for a plant-based diet throughout the month of January. Many people are opting to extend this well beyond January by sticking to a vegan diet, but then also opting for sustainable and animal-friendly purchases when it comes to furnishing and decorating their homes. Even though we are pretty much halfway through the month, it’s never too late to give a vegan diet a go.

Here are three ways that you can extend sustainable and cruelty-free practices into your home.

1. Reclaimed wood furniture

This really is the ultimate sustainable way to furnish your home. Purchasing furniture crafted using reclaimed wood is so much better for the environment. The wood used has often been reclaimed from old buildings and factories that are being demolished, re-using this wood in furniture production reduces landfill and saves new trees needlessly being cut down. A reclaimed wood dining table is also a fabulous way to bring a whole load of warmth and character into your home, forming a foundation to achieving a more sustainable lifestyle.

2. Faux leather dining chairs

Leather dining chairs look great and are very practical, especially in a family home, as they can easily be wiped down. Reclaimed wooden dining chairs or chairs produced from vegan leather are the perfect substitutes for fabric dining chairs. Although tan and grey remain the most popular, there are so many different colours and styles available you will be sure to find the perfect dining chair to complement your table and interior style.

3. Vegan paint

Many paints, although labelled eco-friendly, still have animal byproducts in them. In vegan paints, the animal products are replaced by plant-based alternatives they can then certify that they are vegan and cruelty-free – as they are also not tested on any animals. Switching to vegan paints around the home is a animal-friendly alternative leaving your family and friends in a eco environment.
