Checklist! Get your spare room ready for last minute guests

White bedroom with metal bedframe and hanging Christmas wreaths on window and small Christmas tree beside bed

It’s been hard to be organised this Christmas! If you’re having a last-minute dash to get the guest room ready for Christmas or New Year guests, we have put together a quick checklist to help get the basics sorted.

Wooden bed with fairy lights on headboard and scattered cushions

Start off with….

This is the perfect excuse to declutter the room – get rid of any old books, clothes and other things that may have accumulated in there over the past few months. You might want to turn the mattress over on the bed or buy a new mattress protector. This is the basics covered to add a bit of extra comfort for your guests.

Add new pieces of furniture

You might want to move some furniture around to try a different or more practical layout or you may need to add some new reclaimed wood furniture pieces. If you don’t have one already, a bedside table and lamp is a great addition. A small bedside table will give your guest somewhere to put their book on, charge their phone. With some small table lamps, they can enjoy subtle lighting as they read a little or wind down for sleep. If you need a bit more storage then a wooden blanket box is great to put spare bedding, pillows and bathroom towels in for your guests.

Warm up and brighten up

For cosiness, get a new “winter” throw and scatter cushions for the bed or dressing table chair – get something in a colour scheme that either blends with or contrasts with the other colours in the room. A couple of bedroom rugs, even if you already have a good carpet, can cosy up a room in a tick.

A few extra special touches….If you have the time of course

You can add a bunch of fresh-cut Christmas flowers in a glass vase on the dressing table – this will delight any guest as they walk into the room. A few Christmas decorations will also provide a warm seasonal welcome for your guests, just a small natural wreath will do the trick and looks great with rustic furniture. It’s also nice to leave a few toiletries out for your guests to use. You could also put some snacks, fruit and drinks in a basket in the room for them so they won’t feel like they are bothering you while you are busy getting food and drinks ready for your seasonal celebrations!

Which bedroom colours will help you get a good nights sleep?

woman sleeping in bed with alarm clock
The clocks are changing at the weekend and we gain a valuable extra hour – yay!! But, for some, just that one hour difference can disrupt well established sleep patterns. It is a fact, based on data from sleep studies, that your bedroom colour affects how you sleep – Here we have a look at which colours you can use in the bedroom to help you settle down and sleep better, and which colours won’t.

Photo featuring: Dulwich Reclaimed Wood Bed

Blue is Best

This is the perfect colour for sleep it’s associated with calm and relaxation. In studies, people with blue bedrooms had a good quality, nearly, 8 hours of sleep. On the other end of the scale, people who slept in a purple room had the worst sleep, this colour is hard to shut out and thus prevents you from relaxing into sleep.

Available in two sizes (super king or a king size wooden bed frame) with an impressive solid wood head and footboard. Layering the bed linen and adding scatter cushions will add a cosy feel to the room, add a blue rug to reinforce the blue element in the room.

Serene Green

Green is also up there in great colours to use for a relaxing nights sleep. On average in tests, people with green in their bedrooms had around seven and a half hours of good sleep. Green brings in nature and during studies, people tended to wake up feeling positive and upbeat. Of course, green is the colour of houseplants, a great addition in the bedroom to wake up to. With all the toxins they remove from the air and the fact they are proven to reduce stress levels. There is no better way end and start your day!

Happy Yellow

Surprisingly, yellow was actually second in good night sleep tests, with participants getting 7 hours and 40 minutes of good sleep. Yellow is a warm and relaxing, happy colour. Pale yellow is perfect as the main colour, but you can also use bright yellow as an accent colour in a neutral room to accentuate features.

Pastel coloured bedroom with pale pink upholstered bed, pink covers and grey, pink and green hanging ceiling lights

Comforting Pink

Soft pink has been a traditional bedroom colour for a girls bedroom for many years – but it is a great master bedroom colour also. Blush pink has a hint of beige to it, making it an ideal choice for the walls if you have reclaimed wood bed frame or wooden chest of drawers . Use a pink armchair to create a reading or relaxation corner in your bedroom a tranquil spot to wind down before sleep. Pink also works very well with green which means you can add green accessories such as a glass table lamp on a small bedside table, a green rug and of course some houseplants to bring in elements of nature.

Peaceful Silver

Silver is a more masculine colour but also conducive to a good nights sleep. It is a great neutral colour to add accent colours to – but also works well on its own. Being a very popular colour of 2020, you can easily dress an upholstered bed with some of the many throws, scatter cushions, rugs and lamps available on the market and accessorise your peaceful haven to perfection.

Which colours to avoid

Try to avoid colours like red which is energetic, purple inspires creativity, brown represents gloom and dark grey which will add a depressing element to your bedroom. These colours are disruptive to sleep and will definitely not help you relax and settle down to get a good nights rest.

How to use Feng Shui to position your bed

Modern bedroom with white bed

In this blog we look at the bedroom and in particular how you can use Feng Shui to get the positioning of your bed just right to get the best night’s sleep.

Bedroom with white bed and large floor mirror with words feng shui

First let’s look at the commanding position, this is the position where you want to spend most your time when you are in the room. In Feng Shui there are three items in your house that should always go in the commanding position in their respective rooms – these are the oven, which represents wealth and nourishment, the desk which represents your career and your bed which represents you. So it makes sense that you need to place your bed in the commanding position in your bedroom – this would be so it is facing the door but not directly opposite it. Once you have this position worked out you can look at what type of bed will work best for you.

Round feng shui ornament with pebbles in a home

A gorgeous reclaimed wood double bed frame will contribute to the energy in the room as wood is one of the elements in Feng Shui. So a solid oak bed placed in the commanding position would be the ideal scenario. If you have a large king size wooden bed frame which has to fit into a smaller size room then this positioning may not be possible – so you can place a mirror which allows you to see the door when you are in your bed.

As with your sofa, the bed should be anchored against a solid wall – the wall is there to support you. The gorgeous Beam Buckingham reclaimed wood bed has an impressive solid wood headboard which will offer you additional support. This forms part of the Beam reclaimed wood furniture range which includes bespoke size, made to order, bedside tables and chests of drawers to really embrace the element of wood in Feng shui. This range also blends in beautifully with other rustic furniture you may already have in your bedroom.

You should not have any doors that open near your head when you lay in bed as this may cause you to have headaches, and if they open by your feet this may cause you to suffer from foot problems in time……And you should never have your feet facing the bedroom door – this is referred to as the “coffin position”.

Try to avoid placing your bed so that the headboard shares the same wall as a toilet or ensuite.

Ideally, adults should be able to access the bed from both sides to allow the balance of yin and yang – feminine and masculine. However, for children, it is fine to put a bed against a wall as it gives them additional support.

Try not to position your bed under a beam or sloped ceiling as it creates pressure – if you have no choice then you can soften this feature by draping fabric or painting it so it blends.

How to increase bedroom storage

Winter is coming so it is now about the time when we pack away our summer clothes and get the winter wardrobe out and ready. This is a great time to look at updating storage in the bedrooms in your home. Here we have a look at how you can add storage to different types of bedroom.

Clear out old clothes and toys

Now is the time to declutter the bedrooms. Donate clothes that you have not worn for a couple of summers to charity shops… otherwise they will just continue to build up year after year and you will be forever running out of storage space.

In kids’ bedrooms, it is worth sorting through the clothes and toys they have grown out of. If your child likes to cling on to toys then have a “not sure bag”…. Sort through their toys together and have three categories – a keep pile, a not sure bag and a donate bag. Hide the “not sure bag” away for a bit, just in case!, but they will most likely never ask for anything from it and you can get rid of a few items from there over time!

Toddlers bedroom

You may already have toddler bedroom furniture but find you are running out of storage space as the toys begin to accumulate. A kids toy box is probably all you will need to add to increase hidden storage, something like the Fenshaw Mango Wood Storage Bench is perfect for this. Plenty of room inside and place this under a window and there is also a nice new spot to sit in.

School kids / student’s bedroom

Nowadays school kids and students do pretty much everything online so they probably don’t need too much storage space! However, as they get older they will want to spend a lot of time in their room alone, with friends, doing homework or sleeping! A reclaimed wood desk for studying will match many styles of furniture they have in their room already. A large chest of drawers to store clothes and other items in, as well as a wooden wardrobe will most likely suffice.

Master bedroom

The master bedroom should be calm and relaxing, a place to wind down after a busy day. Having clutter around will completely destroy any tranquil ambience. Once you have sorted through and donated your unused clothes to charity or a clothes bank you can reorganise storage in your bedroom. For most rooms a wooden wardrobe with coordinating wooden chest of drawers will be all you need.

Guest room

This is quite an easy room as long as it is only used for guests. Really all you need to go with a wooden double bed is a small wooden wardrobe with drawers and a dressing table with drawers that can double as a writing desk. If you don’t have space for this then a narrow chest of drawers may work and could also be used as a bedside table

How to warm your home with cosy autumnal lighting

Green hanging lights over wooden table with red berries

As the days grow shorter we turn to artificial light in the home during our waking hours. Who doesn’t love a cosy welcoming home? Here we’ve chosen some of our favourite lighting pieces for each room to give your home an inviting autumnal glow.

Wooden dining table with green pendant lighting and autumn berries

Kitchen and dining space

Luckily for us, pendant lights are hugely on trend right now! We just love them here at Modish Living, there are so many styles to choose from! We love a rustic natural look in the home, and they don’t come much more natural than sustainably sourced bamboo. Natural bamboo complements any interior style. For example, if your dining area is channeling an industrial feel you don’t have to go for metal industrial pendant lighting just because you have industrial dining furniture – a bamboo black pendant light looks completely at home here and adds a softer element to catch the eye. If you want a more neutral and blended look, try a white pendant light.

Living room

A pendant ceiling light does not have to be restricted to hanging over the dining table or in the void over the stairs anymore. Pendant lights look great in any room with a high ceiling and you can always add a dimmer switch for when you want to tone it down. They also look fantastic hanging over a sofa end table where they will provide plenty of light for reading, knitting, sewing etc.

Of course, living room lamps will also provide a subtle glow where you need it most, the Vance Neutral lamp will blend in perfectly with their surroundings with the base being made from natural woven sea grass and a soft glow lampshade. And let’s not forget candles – the ultimate in atmospheric lighting.

Bedroom

Good lighting in the bedroom will help create a relaxing ambience – It’s very unlikely you will be able to wind down for sleep with a glaring ceiling light on and even worse, you don’t want to get all snuggled up and sleepy and have to get out of bed to switch the light off! But a big ceiling light is probably a necessity while you are getting ready for a night out. This is a room where different lights are a must. For the bedroom, the Sassa wicker bedside table lamps are our top pick, produced from natural wicker they will blend in with modern and rustic style and easily merge into your existing colour scheme. Another great look is pendant lights suspended over your bedside tables – not only does this look great but it leaves you with more room for a book, a favourite picture in a frame, reading glasses and your phone.

Hallway

The hallway is a place where you don’t generally need to have lighting for specific tasks – but it is so much nicer to walk into a warm and welcoming home when you get in from the wet and cold. Ceiling lights are a must for practical reasons, but you can add a warm and welcoming glow with a table lamp on a wooden console table or achieve an atmospheric glow from some fairy lights like our wire weave fairy lights.

Top lighting planning tips:

  • For perfect placement, the bottom of the chandelier or pendant should be around 75 cm above your dining table.
  • Always go over the top – you can always turn something off if it is too bright or add a dimmer switch – but adding extra lighting retrospectively is not so easy.
  • Make sure you have plenty of light to do what you love doing when in your favourite chair on those dark autumnal evenings.
  • Most rooms will need a ceiling light but think about where else you might need extra lights for reading etc. Take the opportunity to light up dark corners or highlight your favourite features in a room.

How to create the perfect guest room and study combo

Bed with blue and white cushions next to wooden desk

Wouldn’t it be lovely to have plenty of rooms in our homes, so we had a spare bedroom made up, ready and waiting for last-minute guests?! However, for those of us lucky enough to have a spare room, many have been using it as an office or even a classroom for at least some time this year. If your spare room is working hard as a home office one minute and a guest bedroom the next, here we look at a few ideas to help make this a quick, pain-free and practical switch.

Large bed with grey bed covers and a desk in a bedroom

1) Choosing the right furniture

A matching reclaimed wood bed and desk combo is a great start. The chances are your guest room / office room will be on the smaller side so coordinating furniture is way more sleek than mismatched pieces. A white reclaimed wood desk with a wooden double bed is perfect for a smaller room giving it a more light and airy feel. If you can, position the home office desk next to the bed so it can easily be used as a nightstand by your guests or add a rustic mirror over your home office desk and, voila, you have a dressing table.

2) Clear that clutter

You can stash away a whole lot of what you normally need on your desk in a chest of drawers when you are expecting guests…. and of course, they have somewhere to pop their clothes, so they are not living out of a bag during their stay. Another great storage option is a blanket box, a great place to store seasonal and guest bedding and towels, but also to hide away any office clutter.

3) A touch of comfort

Reclaimed wood furniture, with its character there for all to see, gives a room a homely and warm feel. It matches well with neutral and bold colours and it also works in a traditional or an ultra-modern setting, making it super versatile. For extra cosiness put some scatter cushions on the bed and a bedside lamp on either the desk or a separate nightstand. A coordinating bedroom rug to step onto is also a nice touch. Choose a soothing colour that works as well in an office as it does in a bedroom – blues, greens and grey are great colours to consider.

4) Little treats

Although you will go out of your way to look after your guests, we love the idea of leaving a little basket of tasty treats in their room. You could leave some peanuts or other savoury snacks out for them, some fresh fruit, as well as some sweet treats, perfect for if they feel a bit peckish before dinner – it also means that you can get on with preparing the main event without worrying if your guests need anything to keep them going until dinner is ready.

5) Toiletries

Generally, people do bring their own preferred products, but if they have forgotten something or are on a flying visit with hand luggage only, it’s a really lovely thought to have some toiletries ready for them to use, without having to dash to a shop! Have a little selection of “the basics” in a basket that you can put out along with their wash towels.

Hotel bedroom with dark panelled wall bed with bedside tables

1) Make the bed the focal point

The bed is usually the focus of attention in a hotel room, dressed with a plush throw, plumped up pillows and a mountain of scatter cushions, all there is to add a touch of sumptuous luxury to your room. If you love the natural beauty of a reclaimed wood bed, we think you will love our Beam range. All beds and coordinating bedroom furniture is handcrafted right here in the UK using old reclaimed beams, perfect for a staycation bedroom. 2) Go for a themed bedroom

If you like a minimalist look then consider a crisp, clean and airy Scandi themed room. If your favourite place to be is by the sea, you could create a modern beach themed bedroom using tranquil shades of blue and sand colours set beside pale wood, maybe add some beach hut style timber cladding on your walls.

3) Bedside cabinets

If you don’t have some already, bedside units are a must for a boutique hotel room, a place to stand a glass of water or your morning coffee, your holiday reading material and charge for your phone. With either drawers or cupboards, they also add extra valuable storage to your bedroom, so it remains tidy and serene.

4) A good mattress for a great night’s sleep

It’s all well and good having a spacious king size wooden bed frame but it’s the mattress that makes it super comfy. A decent hotel quality mattress really does make a huge difference. The UK produced Simply Irresistible Mattress 1000 pocket springs and a sumptuous layer of Vytech Memory Foam and is also guaranteed for a full 10 years.

5) Get rid of bedroom clutter

Imagine if you walked into a hotel room with all sorts of clutter scattered around, it would make most of us turn around and walk right out! There is lots of advice available about how to start decluttering and what we really should not be holding on to anymore. A simple place to start is to spend 15 minutes every day in a different room of your house and declutter! And make the most of bedroom drawers to keep your boutique bedroom clear.

6) Relax in a bedroom seating area

A reading or relaxing area works great in a bedroom, a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of a busy home. A luxurious velvet armchair is an obvious choice for this spot, we love the Mateese Velvet Armchair in a soft pink and if this does not fit in with your colour scheme then the neutral Finchley Grey Velvet Armchair will blend into any scheme. And of course, you can always add a cushion to coordinate with your bedding.

7) Add a dressing table and floor standing mirror

Hotel rooms will always have a dressing table and a mirror so of course, if you have the space, you should have these in your room too. A place for pampering day and night.

8) Give the room some ambience

And now for the finishing touches and personalisation! Lighting is an important element and If you like to have music whilst you relax or to fall asleep to then add a bluetooth speaker or a docking station, just like in a hotel. Not only do reed diffusers look great they really can set the mood in your bedroom with their wonderfully subtle fragrance, or light a scented candle and let the flickering light calm the space.

5 ways to style your bed like a pro

reclaimed wood bed with white bedding and throw

We no longer consider our bedroom a “tucked away” room in our homes. A bedroom can be a refuge in a busy household, a place for a bit of quiet time during the day as well as a relaxing place to wind down before sleeping. Here we have a look at how the pros style a bed and get it looking so inviting.

1. Add a throw to your bed

Adding a throw to your bed is a quick way to give your room a new look. Choose a heavier one for autumn and winter, such as a faux fur or a rich velvet to give a warm and cosy feeling. In spring and summer, you can choose a lighter and brighter cotton, or satin for a more airy and cooler feel. In a neutral coloured bedroom you can play with different colours as well as different fabrics. A reclaimed wood bed is a natural and neutral piece of furniture offering you a great base to play with your style.

white bedding with mustard throw

2. Scatter cushions

Cushions are a great way to add style and interest to your bedroom. You don’t even need that many to get the look, three is a good amount for a king size bed. Just buy good quality cushions and then swap, mix and match cushion covers made from different fabrics like satin, faux fur and leather, velvet, cotton and linen, to give your room different looks. You can choose different shades of your main colour or add some eye-catching accent colours or striking patterns.

selection of cushions in different colours and patterns

3. Layer like a designer

We all agree that layering on beds just looks so wonderful in all those designer images. This look is actually really easy to achieve. Start with a plain bottom sheet on your bed, a reversible duvet set is definitely a good starting point for this look, pop it on your bed and fold the top end back and you already have some layering happening. Now add a folded back throw to the bottom half of your bed and for the finishing touch simply add a few scatter cushions.

4. Under-bed storage

A storage drawer under a rustic wooden bed is a very practical way to make your bed look complete, a perfect way to add storage and style! These can be used to store so many things – seasonal clothes, spare bedding, towels…. all these items can be tidily tucked away in an otherwise unused space.

5. Create a theme or colour palette

Think if you want a theme to your bedroom before choosing your bedroom furniture. Do you like the light and airy Scandinavian style? Are you a nature lover and want natural fabrics and living plants in your bedroom? Do you like vibrant bold colours or an ultra-modern look? Reclaimed wood bedroom furniture is a great choice, giving you a versatile product which is easy to base a modern, rustic or traditional bedroom theme on.

5 best wardrobes to keep your bedroom looking tidy

Reclaimed Wood Wardrobe in bedroom

We all have so much to store in our bedrooms, making the right choice in storage options is paramount to creating your ideal place to wind down and relax in.

disorganised pile of clothes

Below are 5 important things you might want to consider when choosing the perfect wardrobe for your bedroom. Of course, this is also the perfect time to give the items you no longer need, or wear, to a charity!

1. Choose a wardrobe with drawers

A wardrobe with drawers is always a great choice. This will present you with valuable extra storage space especially in a small room if you don’t have enough space for a chest of drawers as well…. A light coloured wardrobe would be the perfect choice for you. Drawers also save on hanging space in your wardrobe – socks, vest tops, thick jumpers and items that don’t crease can all be popped away in them. A drawer organiser will help you keep them tidy and ensure that your clothes are quickly and easily found when you need them!

2. Brighten your room with a white painted wardrobe

If you like minimal clutter and clean crisp white in your bedroom then consider a white painted wardrobe to reflect light and brighten the space. Add coordinating reclaimed wood bedroom furniture to bring your room together. A white-painted reclaimed wood wardrobe works wonders to brighten a dark room and gives a small room the feeling of more space.

3. Add character with reclaimed wood

Reclaimed wood wardrobes come in many styles, shapes and sizes – From a natural finish to white painted, to a dark retro/ antique look – there are plenty to choose from that will suit your style. A reclaimed wood wardrobe oozes character, their history is there for all to see in the old nail holes and in the beautiful undulations of the wood. Rustic wardrobes offer versatility, blending as perfectly in a modern room, filled with bold and vibrant colours as they do in a farmhouse style or neutral colour scheme.

4. Open hanging

Not everyone wants to hide their favourite clothes away in a wardrobe! An open wardrobe adds a light and elegant touch to your room, a sort of traditional Provençale farmhouse feel. With a shelf for storing folded items and shoes on, it could be all you need! These are also great in the hallway for hanging coats on and a brilliant idea for your guest bedroom.

5. A touch of Nordic rustic

When discussing wonderful wardrobes we could not overlook the hugely popular Scandi furniture trend! Natural light, clear and clutter-free spaces, clean lines and neutral colours are a great foundation to style the perfect bedroom. A solid wood wardrobe would tick all these boxes, offering storage as well as style. Pair this with other reclaimed wood furniture, soft rugs and light and natural fabrics to create a room that will be hard to leave in the morning!
