Inspiring ideas to create a festive hallway

The hallway is the space where you will welcome guests and visitors when they call by this Christmas so why leave the hallway bear of festive cheer?

1 Declutter

Top of our list before you start adding tinsel and garlands is to give the hallway a de-clutter and a spring clean. It’s tempting after a long day at the office to just kick your shoes off and throw your coat on the wooden hallway bench but when everyone does that, you end up with a coat-and-shoe-mountain.

And you’ve probably noticed that some of those items really don’t need to be there…

De-clutter – take stuff out of the hallway that could ‘live’ somewhere else in your home
Consider updating the storage – a simply wicker basket for scarves, hats and gloves is a great way to stop items creeping through the hallway or being lost

Have a downstairs cloakroom? It is bound to be the place that your guests will want to visit. As well as a deep clean, add some typical festive scent with a room deodoriser.

2 Update the console table

We all know that the lack of space in the hallway can create a pinch point but that doesn’t mean the hallway should be without a stylish piece of furniture or two. If you do nothing else, add a hallway console table.

4 Don’t forget the porch or entrance

How to make the most of your landing space

1 Bookcase heaven

We’ve talked before of creating a reading nook in your home, a space that you retreat to when reality gets a little too real. If you do nothing else with the landing space, why not create a beautiful bookcase for your prized novels and other tomes.

As well as a more permanent fitted option, you could also opt for the industrial appeal of industrial shelving. Simple, elegant and industrial in style, you can arrange your books in colour, as well as stand some upright and others on their side to give a delightful appeal to the space.

Break it up with a well-placed accessory or two and if the landing is a little lacking in light, add a table lamp with a gentle glow.

If the landing isn’t leading anywhere, you could continue the shelving to full ceiling height, a great way of creating storage space for lesser used items.

2 A space to chill and relax

An underused piece of furniture, we take a look at how this autumn, you can add interest and drama to a room by choosing one of our bookcases and pairing it with other key pieces of furniture and accessories.

The bedroom

Great for storing everything from books to smaller items, the Chalfont bookcase makes an interesting addition to the bedroom. We’ve opted for the clean, unfussy lines of the Scandinavian look because it adds plenty of texture and natural fabrics, especially important for the winter months

We’ve come up with four great combinations for the autumn hallway using a flat weave rug, some stunning reclaimed furniture and more…

Traditional chic

Start with the floor with this look, opting for the patchwork rug in various shades of greys and browns. From this build onto the platform with the narrow console table.

This reclaimed wood console table is simply stunning, especially when you add a large table lamp and cluster candles together too. Place the large wall clock above it and you have perfect symmetry in the hallway.

How to style an industrial console table

Never knowingly underdressed, the hallway console table is a thing of beauty that adds more than a touch of detailing, style and glamour to the entrance of your home. If you are unsure how to style it, look no further…

Mimic the angles

If your industrial console table sits alongside the staircases you can mimic the angles and rise of the stairs with the accessories you place on it.

For example, at the end of the console table at the lower end of the staircase, cluster smaller items rising, as the staircase does, to a taller object at the opposing end. A tall table lamp (but not taller than the staircase rise) would work well on an industrial hallway console table.

And it has a lot to do and yet, in this space, there can be several difficulties – lack of storage compounded by lack of space. This can make thinking of hallway decorating ideas a little tricky.

When it comes to storage options, we are not short on options, but this vast array of hallway furniture and storage solutions can leave us a little bewildered. And so we took to Houzz, giving our followers a choice of four hallway storage items.

We asked which one you thought would make a good storage solution – and without a doubt, the solution was the large Chedworth wooden shoe storage. The other items didn’t prove as popular, but they did offer storage solutions to some people.

Accessibility – The Key to Good Storage

For any storage solution to work, it needs to be accessible, but it also needs to be functional and in keeping with your style.

The rustic style, for example, is a popular interior style for both the busy family home and the singleton pad. And no wonder – delicious chunky, it incorporates natural materials and the warmth of wood in rustic furniture unlike any other style. And yet, there is still a pleasant designer edge to it.
