Maddox Industrial Reclaimed Elm TV Unit

Barclay Reclaimed Wood TV Unit

Whether your budget is tight, or you have an unlimited pot of cash, choosing the right TV unit is not just about the money. It is about style too! Whether you want a TV cabinet with doors, drawers or without storage at all, we’re sure to have something to suit your style and budget.

The bestsellers

On this journey through TV units, we are going to start with two best sellers. We can seek inspiration from the choices of others.

Dorset Reclaimed Wood TV Stand

The first best seller on our list is this TV storage unit from the Dorset collection. Its rustic appeal marks it out from all other TV units with storage. It makes a statement but does so without being too ‘over the top’.

The second on the best seller list is similar is that it has a white painted body contrasting with the wooden top. Slightly more refined in appearance, this TV unit with storage from the Savannah range, a reclaimed wood furniture collection that has long been popular.

In terms of pricing, both are in the lower price bracket so great news on all fronts.

When budget needs to work really hard…

This reclaimed wood TV unit with a handy shelf and drawers has refinement and appeal that you have come to expect from us. This wouldn’t look out of place in a farmhouse styled home or one with a rustic appeal either. It delivers what you need from a TV unit stand – and its uber-stylish too!

Fair to middling price range

Right in the middle of the budget range are exquisite examples of TV units that are a pleasing mix of function and style.

Standford Reclaimed Wood TV Unit

In a similar price bracket is the industrial style Standford TV unit with a small shelf and plenty of drawer space. The other similar priced TV unit is the deliciously quirky – but rustic in its appeal – Ashburnham TV unit. With a cabinet at either end and a shelf in the middle, this rustic TV unit comes with two holes pre-cut in the backing from hiding all the cables that come with modern TVs and gadgets.

Beam Reclaimed Wood TV Unit

Climbing the price bracket we are looking at the refined Beam TV unit. Delightfully sturdy in appeal, this is one of those investment pieces that we all seek because we know it will morph to any style and any colour scheme. In other words, this is a future-proofed investment – you just need to find the long-term investment comfy armchair to match!

The top end

We carefully select which designer collection to stock, handpicking every item so that we are confident when our customers make an investment in an item, they are buying a high-quality piece.

This isn’t just about style and composition but the detailing that sets something apart from all else. And so, when it comes to the top end of your budget, you can be confident we have everything covered, from style to quality, to excellent craftsmanship.

The Barclay range is popular -as we knew it would be – possibly down to the elegant appeal of the detailing. The Barclay TV unit from this range had an accessible combination of storage of shelf and four long drawers, hidden behind the handles.

Maddox Industrial Reclaimed Elm TV Unit

Pipping it by mere pounds in the steel framed Maddox TV unit. Made from worked steel and reclaimed elm, there is a weight that makes this two-shelf TV unit substantial. Deceptively simple, it is a piece of furniture built to outlast all others.

Which would be your choice?

A single coffee table or a nest of tables – which would you choose?

Hudson Living Kielder Oak Nest of Tables

At Modish Living, we conduct regular polls on Houzz and Instagram. We love knowing what our customers and followers think of the latest must-have trend or interior design style – sometimes, the answers surprise us!

In this instance, we asked people about occasional tables. Would they opt for a single coffee table or a nest of coffee tables?

We Asked, You Answered

It was an almost even split between out followers opting for a single coffee table to those who loved the versatility of a nest of coffee tables.

Whilst the answer may not give us a decisive ‘one way or the other’ answer, it gives a clear message – the coffee table, no matter its shape or form, is an essential, must-have piece of furniture in the living room.

In fact, a lounging space without a coffee table is not as easy to use and somehow, looks unfinished. This is because the coffee table is the item that helps frame the room. Which is your coffee table of choice?

A single coffee table

The styles we choose to use in this poll reflects two of our best-selling ranges – the un-complex Scandinavian furniture range and the Hudson collection, a range of modern appealing items that ooze luxury and sophistication.

Wycombe Oak Rectangle Coffee Table

When it comes to choosing a single coffee table, there are a few things to consider. Do you need a coffee table with storage, for example? How small or large does it need to be to be useful for your home?

The Hudson coffee table has a lower shelf ideal for storing various items. Its simple design is superb in any living room.

Along similar lines is the Wycombe coffee table with a ladder shelf beneath and a beautiful expanse of a coffee table top. A large coffee table made from the finest oak there is a pleasing simplicity about this item too.

Perfect for framing a living room sofa, the design and light colour sill be pleasing to those who enjoy the Scandinavian style in the home.

Why not…?

As an alternative, why not use a reclaimed wood blanket box as a coffee table with storage in the living room? perfect for hiding a multitude of sins when unexpected guests arrive.

A nest of coffee tables

The beauty of a nest of tables is the versatility that it offers you when it comes to expanding and retracting to meet the ‘demand’ of coffee cups, cocktails glasses… and the like!

The box shape is so very pleasing, so simple, uncluttered and far from overbearing that the Hudson oak nest of tables is a sheer delight in any living room.

Hudson Living Kielder Oak Nest of Tables

Most interior design styles demand at some point in their orchestration, simplicity that is understated. Smaller details such as adding nests of coffee tables into a room is a way of adding storage and other solutions, without cluttering the space.

Everything about this set is divine, right down to its small cubed feet.

5 of the best armchairs for compact spaces

Kramer Moon Wool Armchair

Vienna Grey Spoke Edged Tub Chair

Every home has one – a compact, smaller space that is hard to dress – but with these fantastic seating ideas are ideal when space is limited but you have big stylish ambitions.

Less clutter, more focus

In a smaller space, the less ‘fuss’ there is to clutter the eye, the bigger the room looks and, it has to be said, the more stylish too. The Scandinavian style is perfect to mimic in the smaller space because it focuses on lighter colours and natural materials.

Spitfire Brown Cerato Leather Armchair

As armchairs go, a brown leather small armchair is the perfect example of Scandinavian furniture. All natural material, a simple, unfussy design and yet, more comfort than you can imagine. Sit the armchairs in a pair, with a small occasional table between, and frame it with a light-coloured rug.

A hint of ‘the industrial’

The Scandinavian style is so very appealing but if you feel you need a change from the swathes of wood that characterises the style, include an industrial style element to ring the changes.

RetroSit Brown Leather Armchair

This brown leather armchair, complete with polished steel frame is stunning. A slightly lower slung seat instantly adds an appeal of ‘sit back and relax. Choose a shelving unit that has similar traits – a high polished steel frame and reclaimed wood, for example – so that there is a sense of cohesion between the main players in the small space.

Traditional. Comfort. Statement

If you lust after the Scandinavian style, then you will understand the importance of understated colour. It may use a neutral colour palette but that doesn’t mean just cream, white or magnolia.

Keep the background of the room neutral and understated, introducing a small note of colour with this fantastic high backed tradition, comfortable statement piece of a grey armchair.

Dame Grey Studded Button Back Chair

The stud work is not a million miles from the Scandinavian style either. As for detailing, it is understated and yet delightful on the eye.

For colder winter months, add yet more comfort and warmth with a sheepskin rug.

The element of surprise

Just because the space is small, and it dimensions limited, doesn’t mean you should limit your stylish ambitions for the room.

We are all for introducing a note of quirky or the unexpected. Staying true to the Scandinavian style, we haven’t chosen a highly coloured piece but again have opted for the style to be different.

Vienna Grey Spoke Edged Tub Chairs

This spoked armchair is unlike anything you will find mimicked on the high street, enough to make it a best seller. But the open frame of the chair makes it the perfect addition to any room, from the bedroom to the living room. for a smaller space, it is ideal.

We love its simplicity.

Check pattern and natural wool

The Moon wool armchair, with its check pattern and flicks of colour, is also ideal for the smaller living room or space. If you favour a more traditional style but want elements of the Scandinavian approach, then this is the armchair that ticks all your boxes. Team it with oak living room furniture and you have the perfect relaxed setting.

Kramer Moon Wool Armchair

Dressing a smaller space may seem difficult and yet, with carefully chosen elements, it is so very simple and effortless.

Update your living room in the warm and welcoming farmhouse style

Black and White Cowhide Armchair

Our ancestors from decades ago would never have considered that their practical homes, built and customised with materials at hand, would become a much-sought-after interior design style. And popular it is, with many people turning to the farmhouse style for the living room and across the home.

No wonder – warm, relaxed and cosy, there is a simplicity to the style that is easy to achieve. Why not add these twists and bring about an air of the modern to the style in your living room?

Paying homage

Have you seen anything more stunning than this leather armchair? We doubt it. Plush upholstery matching with the coolness of leather.

The farmhouse style is comfort, which makes sense when you consider the weary bones of a farming family after a long hard day on the farm. Sink into the comfort of this Preston Armchair after your busy day and you’re sure to agree.

Coffee table with storage

Everything about the farmhouse style has to ooze practicality. To stay true to its origins, there is little in the way of frivolous touches in the original farmhouse interior landscape.

Of course, we expect a dash of frivolous here and there but when it comes to something like the coffee table, practical is essential. There are many choices of coffee table with storage from this pleasantly rustic looking reclaimed wood trunk to the refined appeal of this white framed reclaimed wood coffee table with shelf and drawers. Both have so much potential, so much beauty, just how will you decide between the two?

Accessories

Just because there was little ‘frivolousness’ about this originally, doesn’t mean you can’t add your own touches of luxury.

Detailing is important but in keeping with the farmhouse style appeal, retain elements of nature and the great outdoors.

The canvas art of the beautiful hare, with its soft stance and delightful dropping ear, would look simply fantastic.

Louis De Poortere Cameo Rug - Vanilla Dream

A flat-weave rug, with ‘faded’ colours that don’t detract but harmonise your choices of farmhouse furniture, will also add the practical warmth underfoot, as well as warmth and cosiness to the eye. Choose the right size, erring on the side of caution and opting for a large one. The Vanilla cameo rug, for example, has colour without being over the top.

The farmhouse style is a wonderful way to add warmth to the living room – how will you style yours?

Stylish industrial shelving for every budget

Industrial Wooden Bookcase

Oldman Industrial Large Reclaimed Wood Bookcase

A shelving unit is worth every penny you invest in it. It will be the unsung hero of your home for years to come. It will be whatever you want it to be, from the platform that showcases photos, artwork, sculptures or books to the ‘look at me’ piece in a room.

Getting it right may seem like an uphill struggle – how do you buy an item of furniture that will keep on giving, no matter what the interior design trends are? Take a look…

The ‘Look at me’ Piece

Perhaps it is the size, the generous height and the towering columns that make the Oldman reclaimed wood shelves the attention-grabbing piece of furniture in a room? Either way, it is simple yet stunning to the eyeline.

Pleasantly angular and statuesque, to get even more from it and to bring out the warmer tones of the reclaimed wood, use it against a backdrop of pastel colours or let it stand out with bright white walls. Soften it further with the soft glow of a table lamp. And then sit back and admire, as it teases you to do.

The Bookcase

There are times when we need an item to deliver what it says on the tin. If you are a book hoarder or enjoy collecting DVDs but love the understated simplicity and utilitarianism of industrial furniture, the industrial bookcase is exactly what you need.

Industrial Wooden Bookcase

Unfussy. Uncluttered. Unpretentious. Perfection.

Get a lean on

Shelving doesn’t have to be boring, nor does it have to be square or built to a certain set of dimensions and instructions to be useful. Which is why we like this leaning industrial shelving ladder with reclaimed wood shelves.

Oldman Leaning Industrial Reclaimed Wood Bookcase

Dressy enough for any room, we think it also adds style and aplomb in terms of home office furniture too. With cascading shelving that increase in depth as they reach the lower rung of the unit, it offers a range of storage options – in this case, four perfectly proportioned shelves for anything from your collection of cacti to limited edition books.

When less is more

You don’t always need height and sometimes, you don’t need over-complexity of furniture either.

The two-tiered Oldman industrial reclaimed wood shelving unit is ideal for the smaller space but offers the open storage that so many of us find useful and stylish in the home.

Oldman Industrial Reclaimed Wood Console Table

Slim enough for the hallway or landing, it is also a functional piece for the home office too. Imagine that sitting alongside your Oldman desk, with everything you need to hand.

When less is more with a touch of refinement

Some things, just don’t need to be on display. Like your notebook or your smaller items such as your portable hard drive when not in use. The Standford collection takes on the mantle of the industrial look – metal with reclaimed wood – but adds a touch of refinement.

Standford Industrial Reclaimed Wood Console Table

The reclaimed wood console table from the range has the function and form of the industrial appeal, but the refinement of drawer space for enclosed storage with handles that are not fussy, and yet somehow, prettily elegant.

And so you see, industrial shelving is a possibility, no matter what your budget!

How to choose your perfect industrial style coffee table

Standford Industrial Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

Standford Industrial Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

The industrial style is as popular as ever, and more people than ever are bringing elements of it into their home. The coffee table is a versatile piece of bespoke furniture in any home but when it comes to choosing an industrial inspired piece, it isn’t always easy to know what works and what doesn’t.

Industrial style elements

To choose a piece that complements the industrial look, you need to remember the key elements – natural materials, mixed with those found in a traditionally industrial setting. Think metal with reclaimed wood. Think sparse and simple but full of character. Think unpretentious textures and materials, such as the coolness of leather. Think no fuss, no clutter, no fluff.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t have glamour…

Think uplift to an industrial styled living room

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

The polished, cross framework legs of the industrial reclaimed wood coffee table from the Luxe Kensington range offers a little ‘something extra’. Not a million miles away from the clean, almost minimal look of this popular style, you can opt for extra glamour with a glass top finish too.

Think outside of the box

Square or rectangular pieces may have pleasing lines and angles, but too many without a break soon tips from a cohesive style to a room into everything being too ‘matchy-matchy’. This oval industrial coffee table with it rather delicious trumpet column leg breaks the monotony.

Oxford Oval Coffee Table

Think refinement in the coffee table stakes

Reclaimed wood is a mainstay of the industrial style, but this doesn’t mean it has to be rough to the touch or rough sawn. You can opt for refined wood without compromising on reclaimed or the industrial style.

Oldman Industrial Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

The Oldman range can always be relied upon to deliver the results you want and this coffee table with storage in the shape of an open shelf is a delight.

For hidden away storage, the two drawers in this industrial coffee table are a lifesaver when unexpected guests arrive and you have to clear up quickly, as is its smooth reclaimed wood surface complete with metal framework.

Think of something completely different

Aviator Industrial Coffee Table

Throwing a curve ball into any style is a fantastic way of adding detail and a talking point. We’ve long loved the Aviator range – as you do! – so no wonder the high-polish of the Aviator coffee table goes down a treat with industrial style fans. The highly reflective nature of this piece is perfect for matching with darker leather furniture pieces.

Think bestseller

Standford Industrial Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

There are pieces that fly out the door as fast as we can get hold of them and there’s usually a good reason for it. The industrial coffee table from the Standford range is always a very firm favourite. It has a pleasing edge to it that means it fits into any room, from the living room to an occasional piece in the dining room.

Think wheels

Hyatt Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

Industrial style furniture doesn’t mean it has to serious and overly angular. You can have fun with this style and we think the Hyatt coffee table on wheels is the perfectly functional, yet slightly-whimsical piece that is not a million miles away from the industrial look that we all know and love.

With all these options for industrial coffee tables, we’re sure there’s one in the range for you – which one will it be?

Colourful seating to brighten your interiors this summer

2 Dining Chairs with Moon Wool Seating and Dark Wooden Legs

Grayson Lounge Velvet Sofa

With summer sunshine comes summer colours and there is no better time to introduce pops of colour into the home that during the warmer summer months. But this doesn’t necessarily mean painting the walls or opting for vibrant-coloured cushions – it can mean choosing coloured items for the home, such as dining chairs.

But what if…?

… you invest in coloured items of furniture only to find that comes the following season, the look is out of date?

Adding colour doesn’t mean taking a gamble. It doesn’t mean opting for super-modern. Contrary to popular opinion, there are some classic coloured pieces that fit with not only any home but any style, no matter how they change over the coming months or years.

The Dining Room

With your bespoke reclaimed wood dining table taking centre stage, you don’t necessarily want anything else to grab at its limelight. Instead, you want dining chairs that complement it.

Coloured dining chairs are ideal, adding a hint of classic colour that supports, not detracts from the beauty of your dining room furniture.

If colour makes you nervous, why not add an understated pattern? The elegant roll back dining chairs come in a range of finishes, from leather to coloured Moon wool and Harris Tweed, with exquisite patterning.

The Living Room

The main room where you all socialise and relax deserves more than a hint of colour. And again, mix colour with a classic design and you have a successful amalgamation of colour with your chosen interior style.

Wellow Leather Armchair

From the modern to the minimal, the beauty of red leather is never lost. The exquisite Wellow chair invites you into its comfy confines of rolling arms and deep seat, the perfect place from which to catch the Saturday night movie or curl up with a good book.

And don’t forget texture and colour too. By introducing a different feel to the fabric, you introduce more depth to a pace. A velvet armchair in a fresh, exciting colour would do just fine, wouldn’t it?

The Floor

In any room or space in the home, from the bedroom to the landing, to the hallway to the living and dining areas, the floors are often underused when it comes to adding colour to the home.

Choosing neutral colours and shades is all well and good – they are safe, after all, and outlast any interior design fad – but sometimes, a space just needs something ‘extra’.

Louis de Poortere Depp Blue Abyss Rug

And it doesn’t have to be a strong colour or an eye-popping, in-your-face-colour-statement either. Colours that hide and tease a little are perfect, like those shades of blues, sea green and pretty lemon in the Louis de Poortere rug range. How about the cool blue colour, tangled with grey like in the Mad Men blue rug? Perfect. We think, for framing anything from living room chairs to the dining room, the bedroom…

Using Colour the Simple Way

Colour is to be applauded. It brings depth and interest, but summer colours don’t have to be bright and golden. They can be understated, fresh with a touch of luminosity. Enjoy!

How to choose the perfect leather sofa – Our quick and easy tips

Charlie Leather Chesterfield Sofa and Coffee Table

Charlie Leather Chesterfield Sofa

A leather sofa is a big investment – and one of the most permanent too. Choose a quality leather furniture piece, and it will last for decades, seeing all of life in your home.

Leather is a coveted material mainly because it has an air of timeless elegance about it, and more than a touch of the contemporary too. But how do you choose the perfect leather sofa? Is a leather Chesterfield sofa the perfect piece, or do you want something quirkier? We offer some hints and tips…

Look for the signs of quality

For any piece of furniture for your home, look for signs of quality. A leather sofa should have a pleasant and familiar sturdy and heavier feel to it. In fact, with high-quality sofas, you can see this sturdiness – it looks well made, with the leather pulled tightly around the arms and back.

Charlie Leather Chesterfield Sofa Close Up

Look at the stitching as well as the quality of the leather itself. Consider any wooden elements on show and don’t forget to ask about the ‘inner workings’ of the sofa. It is coil sprung under the seating area, for example, or a hardwood platform and frame?

You also want to know what the seat and cushion padding is too. A dense foam is better and longer lasting than a less dense, springier foam. It may welcome your curves for the moment but given time, the foam will relax too much, and it stops being such a comfortable seat.

Style

There are various styles of leather sofa from the low-backed Chesterfield sofa with its rolled arms to the high-backed, modern tan leather sofa style with pleasing contours and lines. Bear in mind that whatever style you choose, it will need to be one with a long life in terms of appeal.

Bamford Chesterfield Sofa in Harris Tweed

Size

Size is important – too big and it will swamp a room, but you also need to have plenty of seating for everyone – one two seater leather sofa won’t fit everyone on after all. In some spaces, choosing two smaller sofas produces a more intimate seating arrangement, better for conversation and interaction.

Top tip – mock up a sofa with empty boxes or mark out the dimensions of the sofa on the floor. How does the size translate in situ?

To make more of space, producing an uncluttered appeal to a room, choose a leather sofa with lower back and arms. Don’t forget, you can vary the height of furniture in the room with a contrasting armchair so that it doesn’t look flat or characterless.

Depth

Not often considered but important in terms of comfort is the depth of the seat. A narrower seat is not so comfy for long, languid afternoon reading the latest bestseller but too deep, and it becomes difficult to get up from the sofa.

Bristol Leather and Harris Tweed Sofa

Colour

And finally, choosing a colour that suits your home is essential. Leather comes in all kinds of colours and shades but remember, if you plan on keeping the sofa for years, you will be decorating around it deep, cherry red colour for a long time!

Tan or black leather sofas tend to be seen as having more longevity in terms of how well they will ‘fit’ with style and decoration in the future.

Our top tip for buying the best leather sofa is to stretch your budget because you won’t be disappointed.
