It has a charm all of its own but we love it for its versatility too. It would look out of place in the living room, would it?

Standford Reclaimed Wood Bedside

Cubic delight!

A cube shape is pleasingly uncomplex, drawing the eye and not jarring or jolting against its surroundings. The cube reclaimed wood bedside table attracts the eye, ideal for the rustic bedroom we think but great for the Scandinavian style too. Available in the colour finishes – natural, medium and dark – the romance of using reclaimed beams for these bedside cubes is not lost either. For £235, you can start to create your own bespoke bedside cube, specifying your perfect dimensions for this delightful must-have piece of bedroom furniture to go with your reclaimed wood bed.

Beam Reclaimed Wood Bedside

The ‘crème de la crème’ of the bedside table world

Detailed. Elegant. Enticing. Just three words to describe the sheer beauty of the Barclay bedside table. Rather than 6 small drawers as the front detailing suggests, it is, in fact, one deep drawer, perfect for hiding away the small things you don’t want on show. The light metal legs stop this piece from looking too cumbersome, something that can be levelled against darker wood pieces.

Barclay Reclaimed Wood Bedside

Coming in at £425, this is an ‘investment’ piece and we know that this means you look for versatility. This is a bedside table that would suit the rustic bedroom, just as it would the uber-stylish living room. It would also make a beautiful addition to the hallway, with a large table lamp to highlight its features.

Which bedside table has your name on it?

The most popular dining tables of 2018

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Dining table

As 2018 starts to near its end, we thought we would take a nostalgic look back at some of the year’s best sellers. The dining table is an essential piece of furniture but that doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish. But what tables from our collections proved to be the best sellers? Was it the oak dining table, or the reclaimed dining table that came out on top?

The Mitcham dining table

Mitcham Industrial Oak Spider Leg Dining Table

We haven’t long launched the Mitcham Collection but so far, the sales of both the rectangular and square dining table from this range have flown out the door. If we are honest, we are not surprised. The beautiful spider legs of the rectangular industrial dining table from the collection are staggeringly beautiful and the square dining table has made for a pleasant note change in terms of shape. Both these dining tables are ideal for the industrial style homes.

The Beam dining table

Beam Reclaimed Wood Dining Table

Another fantastic dining table proving popular with customers throughout the year is the Beam dining table in a medium colour finish; a perfect example of the perfect rustic style furniture you are sure to love. In many ways, the medium finish of this reclaimed wood furniture allows the best of both world when it comes to styling out the dining room. Not too dark to become oppressive but not too light to jar against the rustic styling of the room, we expect the Beam dining table to remain a firm favourite for a while yet.

The Standford dining table

This year, we’ve made a big effort to bring the finish and styling that customers ask for and we’ve kept a close eye on the functionalities that customer asks for too. An industrial extending dining table is clearly a hot favourite at the moment and so it’s no wonder to see the Standford industrial extending dining table on the bestselling list.

Standford Reclaimed Wood Dining TablePopular with customers who either have a family and/or entertain regularly, an extendable dining table ticks so many boxes that they often tell us they wondered how they managed without! This extending table has a central extending area, and with the reclaimed wood top complete with metal legs, the table is perfect for the industrial style as well as sitting well in a contemporary dining room.

The Kensington dining table

Fourth on our list is a dining table that has a slight edge over the others in that we have moved from the ever-popular industrial look and slid into the realm of glamour. The Kensington reclaimed wood dining table with stainless steel legs hints at a style that we think will become increasingly popular in the coming year. There is a hint of understated glamour to this dining table that we were under no illusion when we added it to the Kensington Collection that it would be a popular choice.

Luxe Kensington Reclaimed Wood Dining Table

Match the decadence of the high-shine stainless steel legs with the sumptuousness of velvet upholstered dining chairs. Ideal for the more formal dining room, there is a certain something about this table that we loved as soon as we saw it – and you have proven the point by making it one of our best selling dining table this year.

Which is your favourite?

Enjoy a laidback New Year

Girls Enjoying Food

You don’t have to get dressed up. You don’t have to stay up past midnight. You don’t have to start the New Year with a thumping headache. If you have always wanted to kick back at New Year, resting your feet on the rustic coffee table as you look at the fireworks on TV, we have some great ideas for celebrating the arrival of yet another year.

Small & informal

Friends Enjoying Food

If you do want to ‘party’ then it doesn’t have to be a raucous, huge get-together. There are many of your friends and family who would enjoy a small and informal gathering. Is there anything better than enjoying the company of others, a roaring fire whilst snuggled on a delightful brown leather sofa? Or chatting at the rustic dining table? Ask guests to bring a few drinks and snacks and just let the evening unfold.

Pamper yourself

Want to stay home? Not a problem – there is no rulebook that says you have to party into the wee small hours. Enjoy your evening with a pamper session – take a nap, run a hot bath, soak in luscious bubbles and enjoy a drink or two with a loved one. Or drink tea, read a book or enjoy a film.

Potter in the kitchen

Man Cooking in the Kitchen

If you enjoy cooking or baking, then why not enjoy a few hours in your kitchen making the dishes that you love. From creating tasty tapas dishes to baking a delicious cake or tart, when it comes to enjoying the last few hours of this year, there is nothing better than good food and a drink of your choice. Enjoy with a fruity, punchy non-alcoholic cocktail is also a pleasant treat which you can enjoy with close family or with a gathering of friends. Your choice!

Night time walk

People Looking at Fireworks

We spend winter dodging rain showers, being buffeted by wind and wrapping up against the cold. We rush from one place to another, not always enjoying winter. Talking a walk at night time in the inky-blackness of winter is certainly not on top of many to-do lists. However, why not drive to a well-known beauty spot and enjoy a twilight walk? Take a torch and a companion and enjoy the winter sky and the biting cold. Your choice whether you walk in rain or not but it can be invigorating! Return home to the comforting folds of your leather armchair, a great movie and snacks.

Movie marathon

Most main TV channels will have some kind of movie on during the afternoon or you could subscribe to one of the movie channels and enjoy back-to-back movies of your choice. Again, plenty of pre-made snacks scattered across the reclaimed wood sideboard for everyone to nibble at when they want and a drink in hand of your choice is one of the best ways to enjoy any winter afternoon, but perfect for New Year’s Eve.

Ditch the resolutions

Person Writing List

New Year comes with many traditions including making resolutions to change things. But do we really need to? It may seem obvious to start something new at a New Year but the failure rate of resolutions tells us otherwise. Ditch the resolutions, dim the lights, enjoy a drink or two (if you want), read a book or go to bed. Either way, a laidback New Year is a great way to see off one year and welcome the new one, in our book at least.

We’re announcing our Best Sellers of the year!

Standford Reclaimed Wood Sideboard

With 2018 nearing its end, we thought we would take a whistle-stop tour of our best-selling products from the year. So what flew out of the door?

Chairs

From dining chairs to stylish armchairs, there were many contenders for the crown of the best-selling chair of 2018. There were two, however, that were always top of the list from the year’s start to its end;

  • Allegro dining chair – as leather dining chairs go, the Allegro version is stylishly simple but with plenty of character to match any of our reclaimed wood dining tables.

  • The Brooks dining chair – upholstered dining chairs are always popular but it seems that the detailing and rather sumptuous appeal of these upholstered dining chairs appealed to many customers.

Brook Grey Upholstered Dining Chair

    In the dining room

The reclaimed wood dining table is, of course, the main dining room item but the items that surround it make sure that it stays the star of the show whilst offering essential storage space too.

When it comes to the dining room, is there any better storage option than a sideboard?

Standford Reclaimed Wood SideboardThe Standford range with its rustic charm is always popular so it is no surprise that the large sideboard from the range is gracing many a dining room across the UK (and possibly beyond).

    In the bedroom

As well as customers falling in love with our reclaimed wood furniture in terms of the wood bed frames – and the sustainable Bahamas range – this year we have noticed an upsurge in the popularity of bedside tables.

    Dorset Reclaimed Wood Bedside

The Dorset Collection has flavours of the coast with its white frame and plain wooden tops and details. The bedside tables from this range have provided popular. Perhaps it is their beautiful simplicity that lends symmetry to a room that makes them the number one choice for our customers?

Staying in the bedroom, we come to a tall chest of drawers that customers have fallen in love with time and time again. The elegance of a tall chest of drawers cannot be denied which is one reason why this item is popular but we also think it is a sign in the change of attitude toward dark wood items.

Designers are expecting that dark wood will increase in popularity this coming year and we have noted how the Winchester dark tall chest of drawers has attracted a lot of attention this year. We fully expect it, and other items from our darker wood range, to pick up the pace in 2019.

    Sleep well…

It isn’t just the quality of the mattress that contributes to a good night sleep but the bed frame, the style of the bedroom and a calm setting.

    Standford Reclaimed Wood Bed

All our bed frames sell well – probably down to the beauty and patina of the reclaimed wood that we use across our Collections – but the understated simplicity of the Standford reclaimed wood bed places the others in the shade. We love its clean lines but also the height of the headboard that gives it a little more of an imposing presence.

Which of these items do you love? What else from our range catches your attention? Or will you buck the trend and go with one of our more ‘niche’ pieces for your home?

Recycling at Christmas – How best to go about it?

    Christmas Gift

It is becoming ever more important for our generation, and for future ones too, that we really start to make more of an effort to recycle more. Christmas is the time of indulgence but this doesn’t mean we have to be wasteful.

But what can you recycle from Christmas and how? Are there alternatives to the traditions we have always indulged in? Obviously, here at Modish we love reclaimed wood furniture as it is more eco friendly but what else could be recycled this Christmas?

    Wrapping paper

Christmas Gifts in Red Wrapping Paper

It’s an amazing fact but in the UK at Christmas, we bin 227,000 miles of Christmas wrapping paper (according to Telegraph), a shame when you consider that the majority can be recycled at the kerbside.

When you buy wrapping paper, opt for paper-based one over the foil wrap or one that has bows and the like stuck to it. The latter can’t be recycled but paper wrapping with all the Sellotape and bows removed can be recycled along with your usual recycling.

Of course, there are other ways of reusing wrapping paper in the home, something that many of us are becoming more aware of.

    Christmas cards

    Christmas Cards

Apparently, Millennials are sending very few Christmas cards, if at all. There are certainly fewer placed upon many a tall chest of drawers than in previous years in most households. Most are also forgoing wrapping paper too, a sign that their generation is environmentally conscious. Others put this down to being crotchety about the festive period.

We would like to think it is about helping the environment, something we are all about at Modish Living. The majority of our collections are made from wood that served another purpose in a previous life and we are proud to think that there are many more households enjoying their Christmas dinner gathered around a reclaimed wood dining table, seated on comfortable upholstered dining chairs.

And when wood is not from a reclaimed source, we use wood from sustainable sources, such as mango wood, a waste product of the mango fruit groves.

Christmas cards are a delightful way of staying in touch and we still buy and send around 900 million Christmas cards each year (according to Greeting Card Association), even though this trend may be falling.

    You can recycle Christmas cards, whether they have glitter all over them or are a simpler version;

    • Some councils accepted them at the kerbside
    • Supermarkets will also collect used Christmas cards at their stores for most of January – look out for the special cartons to pop them in
    • Recycled the back of the card but save the top of the card for shopping lists etc.

Find out more about how to recycle Christmas cards.

    Christmas tree

    Christmas Tree and Decorations

    If you opted for a real tree this year, there are two ways of ‘recycling’;

    • Remove all tinsels, baubles etc. and check with your local council for kerbside collections of trees in your area
    • Buy a living Christmas tree in a pot that you can plant in the garden and enjoy for years to come.
    • Invest in a life-like artificial tree that you can use over and over again – there are some fantastic examples of all shapes and sizes, ideal for sitting alongside your sideboard cabinet in the dining room or living room

    Boxes and crackers

Boxes, both white and brown cardboard, can be recycled at most kerbside or collapse them and pop them down to your local recycling centre.

    Christmas Cardboard Boxes

Crackers can be recycled too – but you may have to dismantle them – the inner cardboard tube can be recycled at the kerbside. The paper outer can usually be recycled too, as can the inner ‘cracker’.

With all these options for Christmas recycling, will you be going more eco-friendly this Christmas?

5 Things to consider when choosing a bed headboard

Standford Reclaimed Wood Bed in Bedroom

A bedroom is a place of rest and rejuvenation, and one that should be steeped in style. The rustic bed, of course, is one of the main pieces of furniture – if not, the main piece of bedroom furniture – with the headboard playing an important role too. So how do you choose the right one?

1 The size of your bedroom

Top of the list for consideration is the size of your bedroom. A larger room can take a larger, more imposing headboard whilst a smaller room may need one that is smaller but no less in terms of its styling.

    Winchester Reclaimed Wood Bed

If you can fit in a king reclaimed wood bed but don’t want to overpower the room with a tall headboard, then consider the Winchester rustic bed is an ideal compromise. The king bed frame itself has plenty of detailing with height but is not overly imposing. Full of character, this is surely one of our most beautiful reclaimed wood bed frames.

2 The size of the headboard

However, just because you have a small bedroom doesn’t mean that a tall headboard is out of the running. Bear in mind that a tall headboard and footboard can ‘chop’ a room in half, however, there is a pleasing cleanliness to the lines of this style of bed.

    Nilsson Rustica Reclaimed Wood Bed

It is in no way a style compromise but the Nilsson Rustica reclaimed wood king bed makes for an exciting addition to any master bedroom. With the footboard perfectly mirroring the slightly-taller-than-usual headboard, this is a delightful piece of reclaimed wood furniture with more than a hint of rustic charm about it.

3 Make it the focal point

Every room needs a focal point, the central point around which the rest of the room rotates. This allows us to ‘make sense’ of the room in terms of its style and use. The good news is, the headboard can act as this focal point.

    Nilsson Rustica Reclaimed Wood Bed

A taller headboard standing above the rest of the items in the bedroom instantly attracts the eye. This luxury king bed, also from the Nilsson Rustica rustic furniture range, has a taller headboard that appeals to the eye.

Again, it’s clean, symmetrical lines bring a welcome sense of order to the bedroom, with a headboard that isn’t over imposing.

    4 Materials

Fourth on our list is the choice of headboard material. There are some beautiful padded, upholstered bed headboards in a range of colours that fit with many different trends and styles.

    Standford Reclaimed Wood Bed

Reclaimed wood is a material that is tipped to become even more popular during 2019 and so you can take your place in this with some beautiful reclaimed wood bed frames with headboards.

    5 Trends and styles

As well as reclaimed wood being a hotly tipped trend for 2019, you may also want to consider some of the other trends coming our way and how that translates with your style likes.

There are many bedroom decorating ideas that caught our eye but the streamlined, minimal look is tipped o huge success. And no wonder – calming and pleasant, it gives an edge to your bedroom that is a sheer delight. If you fancy this style, choose a headboard and king bed that packs a punch but isn’t overly detailed or fussy, but still has character.

    Choosing the best bed position

    Winchester Reclaimed Wood Bed

Where you put your bed is dictated by a number of factors, from the floor space available and architectural features, such as a bedroom fireplace or a large window. Choosing the right reclaimed wood furniture and bed position is also about your likes, as well as the look you are choosing to create. Just how do you go about it?

Place the bed before all other bedroom furniture

The bed is usually the largest piece of bedroom furniture and one that has the most impact on how the room looks when everything else is in position. Place your bed where you want it and build the rest of the room around it, from the small chest of drawers to the wooden dressing table.

    The traditional spot is…

    Thornton Reclaimed Wood Bed

Traditionally, the bed in the master bedroom is placed on the longest wall and in the centre. This frames the room and allows the rest of the rustic furniture to come together in a sense of symmetry and style. Frame it with bedside tables and maybe a wooden blanket box at the footboard of the bed and you have the perfect set-up.

If you fancy something different, read on…

The bed in front of the window

    Dorset Reclaimed Wood Bed

If you are lucky enough to be afforded a generous sized window or windows in your master bedroom, the placing of a king bed in front of it can create a romantic, yet edgy feel to the room.

    If you are going for the bed-in-front-of-window placement, there are a few tricks to getting it right;

    • This bed position works best when the window is tall and/or large so that light is not blocked too much by the bed. If the bed ‘swallows’ the light, consider if this what you want.
    • Framing the bed is essential so it doesn’t look like you’ve put it there because there is nowhere else to put it. This means using curtains to frame the top end, complete with matching bedside tables. For drapes, consider using a blind in the window recess.

    Face the focal point

Winchester Reclaimed Wood Bed in Bedroom

Again, if you are blessed with an architectural feature in your room, placing your bed opposite or facing this is a great way to balance the room. From facing the Victorian fireplace to facing the large, ornate window with sloping ceilings etc., if you have a fixed focal point, make the most of it.

    Consider Feng Shui

It is an ancient system of creating peace, harmony and balance in and around the home, and its principles can lend itself to the placing of the bed in the bedroom too. There is a principle called the ‘command position’ which means you place your bed in relation to the position of the bedroom door.

If you can, place your bed opposite the door. However, having said that, you may feel uncomfortable sleeping in this position. Within the Feng Shui system, it is important to understand that your feelings of comfort outweigh what the rulebook says.

    The two-foot clearance rule

If you are struggling to place your bed due to dimension constraints, then you may need to spend some time moving it around until you get it in the space where it looks ‘right’ and it feels ‘right’.

There is a ‘rule’ – but aren’t they made to be broken? – that dictates a two-foot clearance around the bed, the minimum amount of space needed to walk around it.

Setting the dining table for Christmas entertaining

    Christmas Table Setting

Every year, around this time of year, we see hundreds and hundreds of Christmas decorations in every shop we walk into. Whether it’s a new festive table cloth to adorn your reclaimed wood dining table, a display piece or two which would look oh-so-fabulous on that large sideboard in your kitchen diner, or a handful of gorgeous new baubles for the star of the show, the Christmas tree, it’s safe to say Brits love decorating for Christmas!

    Eco-friendlymas

We’ve also noticed this year, there has been an increased focus on an eco-friendly Christmas. Like lots of areas of our lives, people are becoming more conscious of the impacts of their actions, and Christmas hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many shops are now offering decorations made out of recyclable materials and there is quite the trend online of people using or even making their own wrapping paper (an all-over stamp design can look really effective!).

    Napkin on Plate for Christmas

If you are looking for something eco-friendly and homemade for your dinner table, these napkins are super simple. Most of us will have old clothes or blankets or bed linens lying around which we can repurpose into napkins. Simply chop your fabric into squares, sew down the edges to ensure the material doesn’t fray and roll up, securing with a piece of string embellished with a little piece of your Christmas tree. If you are using smaller items of clothing, you may need to use more than one garment. But with several different patterns around the dining table, you’ll create a cosy cottage feel which is full of personality.

    Think outside the box

There is also a trend of people using non-traditional Christmas items to create their dinner table settings. After all, your entire house doesn’t need to resemble Santa’s grotto! If you are entertaining an army of friends and family (first, make sure you’ve got an extendable dining table at the ready), you may find place settings to be helpful. We love all the creative options we’ve seen on the internet this year; names written on chalk placemats in chalk or spelt out using Scrabble letter tiles and trays to name a couple. You may even find a way to put people’s names on the backs of your upholstered dining chairs (just be careful it won’t ruin the fabric!)

You can also get creative when it comes to your centrepieces. This year we’ve seen beautiful botanicals everywhere we’ve looked. To add artistic flair to your dining table, you could opt for succulents and potted plants for a fresh splash of green, even adding a terrarium for a little bit of drama. If you are missing this Christmas sparkle, you could even fill your terrarium with Christmas lights instead of a plant, or you could hang tiny baubles on a potted plant or two.

Christmas Decorations with Card on Plate

If you’ve been creative with other aspects of your Christmas dinner table, you may wish to keep it simple when it comes to each setting. We love the simplicity of this table setting with the flash of red and the little garnish on each plate taken from the garden (perfect for tying each setting into your botanical display in the centre of your table, perhaps?)

    For the traditionalists

But there’s also a lot to be said for simplicity. If you are not so sure about opting for something a little out of the box or it would require you to shell out on lots of sometimes-expensive items for your dinner table (after all, that’s not in keeping with the eco-friendly trend we’ve discussed), then something traditional like this setting may be an excellent option.

    Christmas Decoration Table Setting

We loved the fun addition of Santa’s coat looking after the cutlery for each place setting on this dining set up contrasted against the otherwise simple décor. If you fancy a little drama, you could drape sheepskin rugs over your dining bench or pop a mini Christmas tree or two at the centre of your table.

Let us know your favourite way to decorate your Christmas dining table – we’d love to see photos if you’ve already been entertaining this year fully decked out in Christmas glamour.

How to jazz up your Christmas dining table

    Christmas Card Making

Recently we asked our Houzz audience whether they plan to decorate their homes before 1st December? The answer was a fairly resounding no (with 60 votes suggesting they’ll wait until December is upon us and only 9 saying they’ll decorate earlier). Whilst you may not decorate your home for Christmas just yet, it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas – after all, Christmas is a big operation!

One of the many things to think about when preparing for Christmas Day (it’s 29 days and counting!) is setting the dinner table. Whilst it must be, above all, functional, many of us wish to add a little festive sparkle to our table setting.

    The Perfect Base

Farringdon Reclaimed Wood Extendable Dining Table with Wooden Chairs

Of course, the first step is ensuring you’ve got a rustic dining table which works for you and your family. If you don’t, now is a great time to make amendments! Perhaps it’s your first-year hosting family Christmas and you’re lacking in comfortable dining chairs for each of your guests? If this is the case, additional upholstered dining chairs may be the answer. Or maybe you just don’t have enough space around the table? Opting for an extendable dining table or dining table with bench combination (perfect for squeezing lots of guests, perhaps all the grandchildren, along one side of your dining table) may be just the ticket.

    The Perfect Setting

We thought we’d share a few of our favourite table settings we’ve found to perhaps give you some inspiration for your Christmas dinner this year. Christmas Decorated Plates

We love the traditional colours of this table setting. The classic gold table mat with holly themed china creates a quaint country cottage feel and the handmade merry Christmas tag with a piece of the Christmas tree adds a lovely little touch.

Christmas Table with Red Table Mat

If you like this look, this red padded tablemat with patterned china is another alternative which may provide inspiration. The ‘believe’ tag is something you could easily recreate and is just a little different than writing your guests’ names or Merry Christmas.

    Christmas Table with White Plates

For those that love classic elegance in the dining room (think velvet dining chairs in rich colours), the opulence of this gold and white scheme is great. We particularly loved the subtle nod to Christmas provided by the rustic bauble placed on the dinner setting and the fresh feel of the white roses which are scattered along the table.

Christmas Dining Table with White Plates

If you’re looking for a simple scheme to match your reclaimed wood dining table which you’re planning to leave bare without a tablecloth to display the beauty of the wood, this understated setting is stunning. The plain white china and napkins with a touch of greenery and white candles through the centre makes for a cosy yet clean finish – perhaps for modern homes where you don’t want to compromise on heart.

    The Perfect Frosting

In another blog we spoke about how you could use the upcoming Christmas Card Day on 9th December to make special Christmas cards for family and friends which are far more personal than the shop bought kind (and may even help you to rethink whether you need to send quite so many cards). However, you could also use the day to make decorative cards to place on the dinner table.

    Making Christmas Cards

It is a great activity to do with your children or grandchildren (or even for keeping the little ones occupied on Christmas Eve whilst you run last minute errands) and will add a really personal touch to your Christmas lunch. Write names of your guests, write each guest a special message which will make them smile or even just write Merry Christmas – the options are endless.

Let us know which of the dinner settings is your favourite. How will you decorate your dinner table this year?
